I would definitely talk to your birthday mom and say do you realize how much cake that is *!?@%? I think she is probably going a little overboard. Tell her you can spell the name in candy molds or fondant and it would be just as cute and not so over whelming.
You need to be sweet but firm becuase first birthday's tend to go a little crazy for some moms!!
Maybe she could do 7...two letters each on a cakefor the name, and a big "is 1" on the seventh cake. maybe even cluster them to look like balloons? Just a thought. Moms tickle me for the little kids, they wont remember. They just wanna out do the perverbial Jone's....

I know I tend to make more cake than necessary. Usually, I'm going by the design I want to try and not always by the number of servings needed. But, WOW!! That's a lot of excess cake!
I'm interested in hearing what she decides on. She's asking a lot of you. First, a major change in the order, secondly at such short notice and lastly, now she's complaining about the cost!?! Do not back down on the price!!!!
Best of luck to you!
ooops, sorry...dont know why that posted twice...geesh
Will all these be fruitcakes, or just the wedding cake?

This poor woman probably just thinks it would "look cool" without really realizing how big an 8" cake really is, especially if it is a 4" high cake.
You could do the cup cakes, or the cubes, or do 1 1/2 inch high 8 or 6" rounds: no filling or torting, but the same "look" (what the heck is a numberjack anyway?)
Cut her some slack, she probably really doesn't understand. An 8" cake sounds small and like it will only feed 4-6 people, reality is much different.

Hello ladies, just a quick update - apologies for taking soo long. Anyhow, after pitching all your ideas to her, she decides on a castle instead as the theme of the party is "Princes & Princesses", and a numberjax 1 cake...
Anyhow, it all got done in the end, with just enough time to finish off my very first wedding cake - which had me as nervous as could be. All three are in my pictures - please feel free to critique, and thank you all for helping me through this.
