Hi. I am so new to this. In fact I haven't even baked any cookies yet. I plan on using the No Fail Sugar recipe and maybe a rolled buttercream icing I found on wilton. I'd like to make a easter bouquet. I have the cutters and I am ready to begin. But I don't know how to get my dough the correct thickness. I saw a tutorial that showed using sticks between parchment paper when rolling. What about those plastic things you put on the ends of your rolling pin, do those work? Any thing I need to know about putting them into a pot? I thought I'd get some floral green stuff (told you I am new!) put in the bottom and put the sticks into that.

Any pointers would be great.

You will want to roll the cookie dough slightly thicker than the sticks you are using, so you can insert it well. It isn't critical, that every cookie be precisely the same thickness, it just helps them bake all at the same time.

The rolling pin rings can work, but I find they fall off. I just 'eyeball' it, but then my perception is fairly accurate.

Rolled butter cream can be a bit sticky, but for cookies, you shouldn't have a lot of trouble.

The oasis (green floral foam) works fine, but you need to wrap it with plastic wrap. It is a bit fuzzy, and green dust isn't appealing on cookies.

Yes, the bands on the rolling pin work too. Rolling between parchment paper is great. No mess, easy to put in the freezer for stiffening.

Green foam is good in your container. Make your sticks different lengths so the cookies will be staggered in the pot.

You'll do great!

When using the rolled buttercream, what do I use for the details?

If not the rolled buttercream, what kind of icing to top the cookies with?

You can royal icing for details on the RBC thumbs_up.gif

Another favorite of a lot of people is marshmellow fondant (MMF) w/ RI details.

Good luck! And post some pics when you're done! icon_biggrin.gif

It's funny this question came up right now. I just (like five minutes ago) finished making a batch of the NFSC with my kids. The recipie is great...really yummy and easy to work with. I normally use RI to decorate, but since I was baking with a two and four year old (with six month old coo-ing her encouragement) we just sprinkled colored sugar on before baking. Have fun with your flower bouquet...I'd love to see some pictures.

Remember to put dough in fridge to help with spreading...I usually put the cut cookies and sheet in the fridge before baking...haven't had any problems with spreading.

I just posted that Dollar tree has floral foam blocks, tissue paper, paper shred, glass beads, baskets & containers...etc. ...lots of stuff that you can use.

Have fun!

Thanks everyone for the tips and encourgement! I am looking forward to baking these. I wonder how long the no fail sugar cookies stay frest. Maybe I can bake them, decorate them then freeze them until ready to serve?

I really think I need to invest in some cookie sheets. What do you all prefer? I was thinking of silver, no sided sheets and baking with parchment paper on them.

Dawn2467 - what do you do with all that stuff? (told you I am new icon_smile.gif )

Those are the sheets I use. Especially for baking with sticks. I use parchment paper too. I roll the dough between 2 silicone baking mats though...I had a hard time with it being slippery trying to roll between parchment.

Oh, the stuff...to make bouquets. They have very cute mugs, baskets, boxes, pots...I hot glue the foam to the bottom of the container if it's lightweight...if it's heavy, just tuck the foam in place(sometimes you have to hot glue if it's not snug)...you can cover the foam with tissue paper, paper shred, glass beads, candy, etc.

I also use that wire garland stuff...and, a neat trick is to twist tissue paper squares around a pick/toothpick and poke them in the foam as fillers.

Don't forget, if you find something cheap like those cute metal buckets, they can be spray painted if they're not the right color for you...sometimes you can find seasonal colors on clearance.
