I used to just dislike spiders, but when my then 5 yr old son was bitten by one...then I became afraid of them. I've smooshed every one of them I've seen since then, which haven't been but a few, but still. icon_razz.gif My son had this little bite, like a mosquito bite almost, on his foot one day which I noticed around lunch time. In the early evening he started complaining about his foot hurting, so after supper he went straight to a warm bath - I thought it might help his foot feel better. At around 8 pm, we were sitting on the couch reading a book before bed & I noticed the bite was now pussy looking & there were these red streaks going up his foot and starting to go up his leg, coming from where the bite was!!! icon_surprised.gificon_eek.gif This was just a matter of hours from the time I first noticed the bite until the puss & streaks appeared. I was freaking out. DH immediately took him to the ER, where he was told that it most likely was a brown recluse bite!!!!!!! icon_surprised.gificon_surprised.gificon_surprised.gif Brown recluse spiders can kill a person...I was so glad that my motherly instincts kicked in and told me something was wrong with those streaks on his foot and lower leg. The ER doctor said the streaks were the venom or whatever from the spider traveling upward towards the heart...that it would've eventually caused cardiac arrest or something.....OMG!!! They had to drain the bite, get him on antibiotics via an IV and keep him overnight to keep a close eye on him.

So, of course, the very next day I had an exterminator who specialized in spiders and the like at my house doing whatever it took to deal with them. Come to find out, you can't really kill a spider with a sprayed chemical treatment like you can other insects. They have to be doused on the spot when you see them....pretty much drowned in the chemicals is what the exterminator said. But he went all through the house and underneath it placing a powder type poison that they would ingest. Plus he put this tacky fly-paper stuff all along the baseboards of the house and even in the corners from floor to ceiling. It did the trick...but I was shocked at how many dead spiders I started seeing over the next few weeks... icon_eek.gif Happy to see them, but horrified that they were living in and under our house for who knows how long. We discovered 6 brown recluse spiders dead in the fly paper stuff...I FREAKED!!! I packed up clothes for all of us and we had to stay at my inlaws house for almost a week while the exterminator found and eliminated a web/nest type thing of them under the house!!! Old house on crawl space foundations are usually full of spiders at least under the house, if not in it.

I still use the flypaper trick along my baseboards just in case. So, Susan, maybe you can give it a try! It might give you a little peace of mind icon_smile.gif

ps hope I didn't give you the creepys or anything... icon_redface.gif I just hate them as much as you do icon_wink.gif

Thanks for the info JennT. I'm glad your son was ok. Quick thinking on your part!!! Spiders are nasty little creatures. I know they serve a purpose but I really don't want them in my house. Gives me the willies just thinking about it.

I saw this was edited with the stars, so I thought I would clarify...the 4 letter word replaced by stars (which I now realize spells another word too.. icon_redface.gif ) was meant to refer to puss that occurs in a wound. I can't see how it would've been taken any other way, considering the context of the post...but nonetheless, it was changed to **** icon_confused.gif

Awh geesh, now not only am I wondering when the spider will be found so Lazy Susan can be comfortable, I am now wondering if those weird kind of spiders exist where I am and also and most especially what the heck the four **** stood for originally. I will never get any sleep until all of these mysteries are answered. I just have to stop reading these posts, they are interfering with my sleep, haha!
Oh and by the way Jenn T, congrats on the length of you post, I am not certain but you may have just beaten me for qualifying for the site's longest post, haha! But at least yours was not both long and boring so I think you might still be ok with Cakepro.

Actually kiddo, it was very entertaining, informative and scarey as heck or the other word that 4**** could replace, haha! I just had to tease you about the length of the post, actually now every time I see someone else make a long post I laugh. I don't think Jackie has implemented a word limit yet so it is ok, we are within the rules of the site, just not Cakepro's, haha.

Don't like spiders, either. When I started working in pysical therapy, I did wound care. First spider bite I came in contact with was on an elderly lady. Brown Recluse had bitten her on her bottom (middle of the cheek). It went systemic and she ended up losing that whole bottom cheek. She did joke about having always wanting a "flat butt".

I have also passed out when my husband killed a spider that was carrying babies on its back and they scattered when he killed "mother".

And JennT I always think about you living in Alabama. My DH and I thought we would do the nature trail at the Bon Secour. Didn't see anything except those yellow and black spiders that made amazing webs. Thought that until I walked right into one that stretched across the trail. Talk about having a heart attack--I walked behind DH until he got me out of there. He thought I was going to hyper-ventilate. He probably would have left me there instead of carrying me out. LOL!!!

Oh Mac!! Those spiders are HUGE!! lol They're called banana spiders...not poisonous or anything..but very scarey-spider looking. They are literally allllll over the place down here, especially in woodsy or undeveloped areas. We live up at Fish River, about 15-20 miles or so north of Bon Secour. My MIL & FIL are right on the river and those spiders have giant webs all over their property. We have some here on our property but, thankfully, I haven't seen any close to the house. Only further out in the yard between the oak trees and right along the edge of the woods here. If you ever have the nerve to look at them closely, they really are kind of pretty...with their coloring and patterns and such. But if I walked into a web and it got on me I would have a coronary!! icon_surprised.gif I don't blame you for putting hubby in the line of fire ahead of you along the rest of the trail!! lol icon_razz.gif

Here's a few links to check out this spider:

this one shows how large they really can be:

Just the other night I was walking down the hall to go to bed and noticed a spider repelling from the ceiling. I watched it closely so DH could kill it for me when he was finished with what he was doing. Anyway, he came along and grabbed a tissue to get it and he happened to catch the web with his leg and it dragged the spider behind him and bumped him a couple times. By the time he got hold of it with the tissue, we realized that it was a black widow! It was the largest one I'd ever seen. YUCK! Gave me the creeps and I'm not afraid of the things.

I don't like ANY bugs...I am completely grossed out by them and I have panic attacks when I must kill one. DH says "spiders are our friends" (mocking my fear, of course)...but the truth is the do eat other insects. I am getting the willies just thinking about this stuff.....

I'm in Brooklyn and in the warmer months we get some kind of centipede- looking thing called silverfish. OH MY GOSH!!!! I HATE those things!!!! Oh yeah...no to mention the occasional waterbug. Big Black and fast. You only see those in the middle of the night when you're half asleep and your DH is snoring so loud you can't wake him up to kill it!

I forgot about those things. I've been kinda spoiled since I moved away from Georgia. We had soooooo many bugs there! Now that I am in Washington the only ones I have to contend with are the spiders and they got some nasty ones. The ones I hate most are the "jumping" spiders. The sooooo freak me out!
