Is it possible to make a tiered cake and ice it with buttercream!? I mean, I know it is, but any hints on how to make it look as good as fondant? Any pictures?
Thanks!

Oh course! All of my cakes are buttercream. I only have a few of my wedding cakes posted. http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-photos-by-jenn123.html
Use a recipe that crusts and use the Viva towel method if you want it really smooth.

I only use buttercream. Only have 1 made with fondant. Many people have commented and "came in for a closer look" on my cakes to see if it is buttercream or fondant. Practice with the Viva paper towel method and you can achieve that look. I learned about it in the last 12 months and will never do a cake without paper-toweling it.

I also only use buttercream, actually never tried fondant. I only too a beginners class at a local school about 27 years ago. They never mentioned anything about fondant. Oops, I'm showing my age.

This is a practice cake I made for my son's wedding cake awhile back using the faux fondant method on this site. It was quite easy to do. I should have gone back and smooshed all those little white dots down, but I was in a rush, I guess. Anyway, my son, (it was for his wedding) preferred the look of the traditional straight edged cakes. Final product in my album. Hope this helps!
