Went to my friend's house today to teach her how to bake and ice a cake (a bit like blind leading the blind because my icing technique is not so good). Our daughters are in the same class and this year they are going to make their First Holy Communion in October. Now Kerryn has never made or iced a cake before so she asked me to teach her.
Taught her how to make the choc cake that I always make that she and her kids love. Then taught her how to make buttercream. After that came the fun part!!! Taught her about the importance of crumb coating (great tip learnt on CC) and then iced with a thick layer of buttercream.
Put a layer on fondant and then the decorating started. I had brought over my cake toys so we cut out her 3 kids name from fondant using the 'tappits'. Piped two rows of drop flowers on the bottom. Used lustre dust to paint the top rim of the cake. Put cut out flowers on the top with the kids name and let her loose with my food writer pens.
It was the craziest looking cake you can imagine but she had fun and was so proud of herself. Cake was a little lopsided but I told her to take a photo anyway and keep practicing and she can compare cakes after a few more attempts.
She was soooo happy and could not wait for her kids to come home from school and see the cake she made. Made my feel good that I could help a friend.
Helping a friend is the most rewarding thing in life. You did a great thing today. What are friends for. LOL I love my friends deeply and would do anything for them.
