I have never used gumpaste or fondant and am interested in experimenting with them. What is the difference between them? Do they have different purposes?

fondant is used as a "covering" over the cake. You would typically but a layer of buttercream or other icing over your cake, then roll out the fondant to the size of cake you are decorating and cover the cake with it.

gumpaste is used to make flowers, figures, etc... for your cake.
