Where is the cheapest place to get Satin Ice or pettinice, too. I've ordered some from Bakery Crafts, but there has to be someplace cheaper!

I order from cakesbysam.com just because they are so reliable and fast. Not sure if they are the cheapest. Will be interested to see what others post.

Here's a link I posted on a different thread that talked about the same thing. Hope this helps you! icon_smile.gif

thanks for the link. They're really expensive though! They want $50 for a 15 lb pack of pettinice. I get that for $35 from Bakerycrafts! icon_eek.gif

That's a big difference. I was just hoping someone might know of a wholesaler that was cheaper than Bakerycrafts, but maybe i'm not getting that bad of a deal... icon_smile.gif

You know if you want to the very best you can offer you just need to make it yourself. I have a great MMF recipe that you can add flavoring to and coloring, and it's really good!! My customers have loved it, and my kids always think I should make a batch just so they can eat it!! It's not hard, it's fairly inexpensive to make, it's easy to work with, and it tastes great!

Here's my recipe:

1 bag mini marshmellows(the large bag)
1 Tablespoon water
1/3 cup shortening

Pour this into a big microwavable bowl and mix. Cook on high for 35 second intervals, and stir in between, until mixture is smooth.

Add to this:

Powdered sugar (1 pound) + whatever it takes to make it pliable and not sticky

For chocolate fondant:

Add 1/3 cup of cocoa to the powdered sugar
1 tablespoon shortening

Do this by sifting the cocoa and the sugar together in a bowl, sift it 3 times to make sure that it is fully incorperated into the sugar. You will then knead the extra tablespoon of shortening into the dough to allow it to be workable and soft.

For any other flavor you can just add flavoring drops and omit the same amount of liquid as you add in flavoring. Coloring can be added to bump up the chocolaty look if you prefer. You can purchase brown paste color(Wilton makes one).

Hope this is helpful to you. I don't like to spend anymore than I have to, or wait for things to come in the mail. I also prefer homemade to store bought when I can help it. It's just better somehow! Try this and let me know how you like it. Good luck to you!!

that's more shortening than I've used, which might make it easier. I've never been able to get consistant results with the MMF, and the satin ice or pettinice are really good, so I usually use those of choco-pan, which you could eat with a sppon. I need to be able to order the satin ice for my students and store customers, though, even if I do use MMF. I'll definately try the extra shortening, thanks!

I order my SI directly from Satin Fine Foods. The price and shipping are reasonable and the product is fresh and arrives very quickly.

Do you have to order a lot from them or have a vendor's license? One website I went to said that you had to order 8 of the 5 lb buckets! Yikes!

I've heard a lot of people say that you need a minimum order and/or that you need a tax ID number. I didn't and I don't have a tax ID # and have been ordering from them for a couple years now.

they asked if I have a shop, but never wanted any ID # or anything, and they say on their form that there is a minimum order amount, but the email said it's not necessary.
