I was helping DH clean out fil's workshop and demo it yesterday. We had found 2 boxes of wooden dowels that mil used to use for crafts. Unfortunately, they've been in this workshop for years now unused and possibly anything could have gotten on them.

I'm wondering if there is any way I can make sure they are clean (like a diluted bleach bath, rinse and dry well??) in order to use as cake support. I first thought easy no problem, then as I got to thinking more realized this is probably not worth the fact they were free.

Disclaimer: If anyone has suggestions, feel free to post. Don't blast me b/c I was considering using them and you think its gross b/c of not knowing what was on them. tapedshut.gif I was only *thinking* about it and only after I make sure they are clean. icon_lol.gif

I would *think* a diluted bleach bath with boiling water might work?

Any one else?

I wouldn't put bleach on them as it might taint the taste of the cake. I'd boil them - that way the germs will die and you've not used anything toxic on them.

Yep, I agree... a short time in boiling water will do the trick. Not so long that they get totally water-logged.

I just put mine in the dishwasher and ran it. They came out pretty clean.

I had some stored that were dusty and after I boiled them they were fine. I boiled the water 1st then added them for 1 minute. I would not add them before the water boils b/c they will get water logged and then be no good. Hope this helps.

I buy my dowels at the hardware store, so when I put them in the cake I always wrap in saran wrap. I find this very time consuming, does anybody else do this?

Based on that statement alone I would toss them and buy new dowels they are cheap enough. You don't know What could have possible leeched into them. Boiling them may not be enough. Also, are they food grade dowels? Best to be safer then sorry.
