Would and orange cake with chocolate butter cream frosting taste ok?

Or should I stick with a chocolate cake?

orange w/ chocolate is a "classic" combination.

it really depends upon the balance between the two.

My fears would be:

1) depending upon how orange is done, could taste so artificial)

2) getting chocolate not to be overpowering.

The recipe I plan to use is the ultra orange cake from the Joy of Cooking. The only orange flavors are from oj and orange zest.

and I usually add two tablespoons cocoa powder to one cup of butter cream.

(chocolate butter cream is one of my friends favorite things, so I want to be sure to include it somewhere. And I thought chocolate with chocolate would be too boring, yummy, but boring.)

I think it would taste great, but think you should add a little orange flavoring to the chocolate bc as well. I use orange flavored chocolate (76% cocoa content), melted, added to my chocolate bc. It tastes really great with the hint of orange, so I think if your orange cake isn't too heavy on the orange flavor, it would work well together. icon_biggrin.gif

Orange and chocolate?!? That's heaven to me! Ever had a Terry's Chocolate Orange? Oh so good!

Your recipe sounds really good along with the buttercream.

Add a little Grand Mariner to your frosting. It has a very light orange flavor and any opportunity to use Grand Mariner is a good one! icon_biggrin.gif

Trying to watch my cholesterol so I'm fantazing about Grand Mariner ganache.

Hehe, I'm right there with you on the ganache fantasies bubblezmom!

I wish we had the money for Grand Mariner, but the only thing it would get used for is baking, and even then rarely. So I have to settle for non alcoholic flavorings. icon_sad.gif (Although I admit, when I'm at work and have free reign of the bar, I love putting flavored liqueurs in all the baked goods.) icon_wink.gif

Sounds wonderful. My mother always said the love of the chocolate/orange flavor combination was a sign of a sophisticated palate. So there you have it!

I love chocolate and orange together! I have used a thin layer of not-so-sweet orange marmalade to torte chocolate cakes and it has always gotten rave reviews! You could do this with a thin layer of chocolate buttercream or skip the buttercream entirely.

When will it be ready and should I bring my own fork?

HAHA!

oh you made me laugh out loud! icon_lol.gif

I hope it turns out ok.

I had a dream last night that she said she hated it!
Now I'm all nervous again! icon_surprised.gif

I plan on making the FBCT for the top today. And baking the cake tomorrow, and decorating it tomorrow night.

I'll let you all know how it turns out! thumbs_up.gif
