Your cake is done..... whew! The the anxiety sets in!... It has to go inside of a car. Even if I'm transporting a flat sheet.... I have visions of it turning upside down somehow in route. icon_surprised.gif Today I had my first cake pick up. I usually deliver. I thought the worry would be less.....not! It was a baby shower cake with fondant babies on it. Two minutes before the lady (a friend from work) arrived, I noticed that one of the baby's upper half had fallen over.... must've been when I put it in the box. I fixed it with no problem. When my friend got here, I gave her a stick of spaghetti and told her what to do if it fell over again during the car ride...and to call me if there was a disaster. After she left, I freaked out! I kept thinking "what if it falls over and an eye or something gets ruined?...she won't know what to do!!" I felt like crying! icon_cry.gif My husband thought I was crazy icon_eek.gif Does anybody else do this?? I think maybe I get a little too attached to the cake in process and worry about it when it's gone! I even wanted to call to check on it!! I figured since she didn't call.... it was fine.
Please let me know if I'm the only freak out here........ Hopefully, it will get better when I've done this longer. icon_rolleyes.gif

I, too, have freaked out over the "what if's" whenever I deliver or send a cake off to someone who picked it up. In fact, I am still worrying about an x-rated cake I just finished... I pray the ... (OK, I will keep this PG rated)... frank & beans stay 3-D!!

So, you are not the only freak. Feel better? icon_redface.gif

It freaks me out too. The first 2-Tier cake I made (from my intermediate class) fell over in the box and the bottom tier started to crack. Three good things out of this:
1. I wasn't driving ... it wasn't my fault. lol
2. It was just a class cake and not promised to any one. (Wish I knew about cake balls back then.)
3. I am really careful now about transporting cakes. (Especially if my DH is driving.)

The last 2 stacked cakes I delivered the road was so bumpy because of all the ice ruts I thought the cakes would disinegrate into a pile of crumbs, but they were fine. I need to find one of those sign that says "Cake on Board". icon_smile.gif

It is natural to freak out.. I think it truly shows how much a person cares about his or her's work... My mom use to go with me on delivering wedding cakes in the beginning,, it was bad enough that i had hives and panic attacks, but my mom starts in with the what if syndrome,, what if we get in a wreck, what if the cake falls apart, what it you drop it, what if they don't like it.. what if it gets to hot,, what if no one is there to recieve the cake,, arggggggggggggg!!!!!! Sooo I finally said, to dear mom,, sorry you can no longer go on deliveries with me,,hahahahahh she felt better already! ahahahah but here is the thing,, just make sure before you load up the cake or cakes,, that everything is attatched well, and that you have a flat surface that the cake is sitting on.. and you have a skid mat underneath of it.. always,, and i mean always take an emergency fixing kit with you,, the tips you used with the icing too, a spatula, wet naps for any clean up off the board,, door stop for holding the door open while you carry the cake,, tooth picks, in case you have to pull a spec off, extra flowers if you made some,, just take extra of what you think might just go wrong,, then at least you can fix it.. now,, we worry wayyyy more than the any civilian would, becuase it reflects on us..but we see more defects than good, and others who are civilians don't even see them,, just be prepared for anything out there, and you will feel a bit better.. and trust me after a while you will get use to a bit.. but i still after 7 years get nervous on wedding cakes.. !!!!! Good Luck,, and try to relax! icon_smile.gif

I just transported a cake today, a 12 x 18 x 4 with an 8 inch heart cake on top -- VERY heavy!! I couldn't even lift it off my table!! Dearest hubby made me a sturdy wooden "tray" as it were with feet and handles to put the cake on and we canabalized a moving box to "wrap" around the cake for transport. He drove in his handyman work truck with me in the back with all his tools and my cake! icon_lol.gif I just had to hold (the handles) on my cake and he did all the lifting. People were thrilled and at dinner tonight DH tells me "I'm glad that's over with, I was losing sleep over the delivery!!" ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!! icon_lol.gif Just wait until September with that monster cake I have due then!!! icon_wink.gif

i just transported my first tiered cake a few days ago. i was freaking out the whole time! every turn, slight bump, or stop i would hold my breath and pray. you'd think that with someone picking up their cake there would be less anxiety, but i guess when you are emotionally invested in your art, it doesn't matter! lol.

thats soo true!!! on some that have delicate stuff on them,, i have bought that really thick foam from walmart and used that on the floor of my van ,, then i put a skid mat on top of that , then the cake.. make sure the cake is heavy enough to sink in on it though.. and i have taken that window chalk and written on the back window.. SLOW CAKE IN TRANSPORT! this helps you relax a bit,, so that your not so worried about the people behind you when your going 10 miles an hour around a curve!!

I flip out every time! I delivered a 10" fbct today and couldn't shake the nerves -- I mean what if a the top half slid off! Okay, ridiculous, but I still imagine the worst always. I always breathe a sigh of relief when I open up the back and the cake looks the same. I had an extra worry today because I had to leave the cake sitting in the back of the car for 1 hour before I delivered it. I was sure it was going to melt. Again, ridiculous, but nonetheless -- I think we all worry.

Just imagine being one of those gals they show at the Oklahoma Wedding cake competition! I think I'd have a heart attack getting my cake there.

You think that something like that memory foam mattress would work? Like in the commercials where they have a glass of wine on the corner of it and someone jumping on it and the wine doesn't move? Sure have thought about checking it out. Wonder if you could get it by the yard? icon_lol.gif

Love the idea about the memory foam!! Might just wrap my whole van in it.......
You know...... I might just start walking the cakes to their destinations!!! icon_lol.gif
Royalicing- if you go into the galleries, search and type in "alligator"... you might find something. icon_smile.gif

No you are not crazy! I was in a hurry and forgot my grip pads and laid 2 cakes in a sheet cake pan, duh! That was an accident waiting to happen! They weren't for anyone, just show, but I came down the hill and one cake slid into another and I almost hit a curb trying to save them! I was shaking by the time I got there, it took me 30 minutes to calm down. LOL!
