I have read different places and a few forums about fondant. My question is how do you roll yours out.

I read somewhere to use crisco on the plastic liner and then a little crisco on the rolling pin. Then I have read to use powdered sugar or corn starch.

The few times I have used fondant, first time I use powdered sugar, I thought the result was too sticky, the rest of the time I have been using corn starch, which works great, but I always have to dust the fondant off after it dries.

Does anybody use crisco or shortening to roll out fondant?

What IYHO is the easiest way?

I just roll it out on a non stick mat using a non stick rolling pin. I don't use crisco, pwd sugar or cornstarch.

If I am working on the countertop I will use cornstarch. If I am working with a bigger piece I use a piece of heavy gauge vinyl from Wal-Mart and I find there is no need for powdered sugar, cornstarch or Crisco. It works really well for me. I do not like the Wilton mat, i find the fondant sticks to that and I must use cornstach. I don't know what makes the vinyl I have work so well, it just does. Perhaps it's beacause it's a thicker kind, I don't know....

I use oil on my mat and on my rolling pin just very little. It works for me I had't heard that you could. I had trouble with the cornstarch and sugar so I just decided to oil my mat and rolling pin works great. I will look into that vinyl from Walmart thanks. I'm always looking for new ideas. icon_smile.gif

I always use oil... I lightly spritz my table with it (using one of those atomizer thingies)... then I rub my hands over it to evenly coat the table... then I rub my hands over the rolling pin. Works for me!

This also makes the fondant easier to handle because the oil extends the surface drying time of the fondant so it's less likely to crack when I'm shaping it over a cake.

I roll mine out between two large sheets (precut, professional grade) of parchment paper and ues a bit of cornstarch. I never have a problem.

I use solid crisco - put a tiny bit on the mat and and the rolling pin - never have any issues with sticking or it looking like it is covered with powder. Go with whatever works best for you!

Thanks for all your replies. I will try the oil the next time I work with fondant.
