I am making a birthday cake for a friend's daughter this weekend and she just told me she would like chocolate. I have made some fondant cut out flowers to use as accent on the sides of the cake in yellow, purple and white (colors she likes). Would they look ok if I use chocolate icing or should I go with my original plan and use white BC over the chocolate cake?
I think it would look very good. Brown cakes with colored decorations are sort of trendy right now, so I'd do it. I've done chocolate icing with butterflies on it and it was pretty.

I think it would look nice, and it's true they do seem to be the trend right now.
Thanks! The yellow and purple are a light shade. So it should be a nice contrast to the brown. Now that I think about it I have seen quite a few nice looking cake with brown and pastels. I'm going to make a little purse on the top tier using a 6in round cut in half. I think I'll make that with chocolate icing too and make the middle tier a different color maybe the purple (that's her fav or the 3 colors). Thanks for the advice!!
tastycakes! I thought you were just really excited about my project!!
I agree, the colors would work well. The entire composition would be quite fresh and modern. Go for it !
Here is the finished cake. I had alot of fun doing it. I haven't played with fondant in a while and it was fun making all the flowers. Had some problems with transportation (dh is no longer allowed to be my driver
) during the 2 hour trip but the birthday girl loved it anyhow. How often would an 8y/o notice the cake slide around!?! And my handle broke so she ended up with a clutch purse!
Thanks for all the advice everyone!!
WooHoo!! How cute! ![]()
Great job on that cake. Congratulations!

ust have to ask if you put some icing on your board under the first layer of the cake? If you do this, it should help keep your cake from sliding around. Janice
Well...here's what I did and I'll never do it again...I didn't have my contact paper and wrapping paper to put on the bottom board and couldn't get them until the evening after the little one was in bed and I needed to start decorating soooo I put the 10in cake on a 10in board decorated and then put the whole thing on the 12 in board once I got it prepared and put the border on. I put some icing between the 2 boards but obviously not enough. I always put on the board under my cake and have never had a problem but just didn't put enough between the two boards. If I have to d it again that way (which I won't
) I just need to put more "glue"!!
Thanks for all the kind words!! I was really worried the colors wouldn't look good but I was happy in the end! The worst part was trying to write the happy birthday on the cake with 10 little girls on top of me watching with big eyes!! They were soooo cute though!!
