Welcome to Cake Central. There is a ton of good information in the threads. You can 'search' and find so many answers.
For classes, check with your local hobby/craft stores. Most of them offer Wilton Method classes. These are the most affordable, and cover almost all the basics, and some of the specialty techniques.
The Michale's stores are now giving fondant and gum paste classes in addition to the regular cake decorating classes, I think you can look it up on their website, unfortunately I missed the one that started in February, I might have to take the other classes as a refresher anyway. I also know that Kake Kraft Korner in Ferndale (near Glen Burnie), gives classes as well and their number is 410-761-0485. Their email address is [email protected], they do not have a website but they have been in business for over 30 years. Hope this helps some and good luck.
You could also check out the Wilton site. They have instructions there on how to do some of the flowers, figures, etc.

It could get you started, till you can find a class, at least.
