I currently manage a retail clothing store and do my cakes on the side. I would love to transition to doing cakes full time, however, I wonder if I'll ever really be able to. I asked the manager of a grocery store bakery for an avg dollar amt that they start their decorators off at. She replied $11. Is this pretty much the norm? Under different circumstances, I would go for it, because I truly do love this. However, my DH will be going to school later in the year and I simply can't afford to cut my salary that much! Can anyone share their experiences of transitioning from one field to this FT?

You may find that working in bakery retail (grocery stores) it is very stressful, hard work, with not a lot of creativity. It does hone your basic skills. But, grocery retail can be intermittent, and part time. You have to evaluate the risk for yourself.

Well, I actually just used that as an example. I don't truly desire to work in a grocery store bakery for the very reason you listed...I really don't want to do what I call cookie-cutter cakes. I just asked that bakery manager because I had absolutely no idea what the range is for a decorator. If anyone has any other experiences, please let me know.
