its like a custard. When we buy it here in the grocery store it is a powder form. The powder is what you would add to your cake so i am not real sure what you would use over there other than something resembling a custard.

Instant pudding is what is meant.
Pudding -American pudding that is-is unlike anything the English call pudding.
It IS a creamy dessert--not usually 'whippy!-generally more custard-like.
Originally pudding is made by mixing cornstarch, milk and XX (could be cocoa, etc), cooking and then cooling the mixture.
I am sorry, I do not yet know what the British equivalent would be.
Please feel free to PM me later on, and perhaps by then my ressearch will reult in an answer for you!

Hi libby,

The pudding added to cake mix, is "instant" pudding (as opposed to cooked) usually made by Jello or Royal. The size used is the small box, which makes four 1/2 cup servings. (The boxes weighs between 3-4 oz.)

(FYI, there is also a large box, which I don't have.)

Here's a link:
(This shows the large size box.)

This the right size (and gives ingredients for this flavor - but it doesn't require cooking):

P.S. If you were going to actually make pudding, you'd only need to add two cups of milk to the mix - and voila!!!

HTH
