I see alot of people typing about the Sugarcraft gun and was wondering if anyone has ever used the Makins clay extruder(or any clay gun)...if so does it work just as good. I like to save money where I can and with the Sugarcraft being $50 and the Makins being $20 plus I can use a coupon I wanna know if its worth it to go cheaper this time.

TIA Deeva

I don't know myself, but the pillow cake tutorial on CC shows a clay gun for the design on the cake. Maybe you could PM her and ask her how she likes it...

I bought an extruder and nearly gave myself a hernia trying to squeeze the warmed up fondant through the darn thing. Either there's a trick I'm unaware of or you need to get ahold of a circus side show strong man and keep him in the cake cupboard for when you need stuff extrudered...I bought a clay gun from a lady that happened to have an extra right here on CC and it's MUCH easier to use.

They all work, but because the Sugarcraft gun has a squeeze handle it's easier on your hand. Pushing fondant or gumpaste through any gun is hard. I have the Makins gun, and rigged a caulk gun with a large washer to put the gun into. Now I can use the squeeze handle on the caulk gun to push the handle on the Makins gun. Get a good caulk gun, not one of the cheap ones. The better ones work better for this, but still shouldn't cost more than $10.

I've also seen a 'bellows' type wood contraption that is used to push the plunger on normal clay guns.

As they say, 'necessity is the mother of invention'.

i have the newest makins extruder (comes in a little kit) and it works great! I also have the sugarcraft gun which works only it holds very little fondant. I wasn't able to screw off the top and add fondant to make a long run of fondant without being able to see the stop and go in each piece I made. I love the Makins one. it was like $40 for the kit but I used my 40% off coupon at Michael's for it so it was easier to take. I'd recommend the Makins one. I also purchased to Wilton cookie press and the discs from Earlene and had no luck at all with that combination either - and it wasn't cheap!

i saw duff mix crisco into his fondant to use his gun and it works great. I did it and actually used my sons playdough clay plunger thingy to make a helmet facemask. it takes a little longer to dry but other than that i see no difference. i didn't taste it. I also used it in my cookie press. The playdough thing was faster though.

I have the regular clay gun and the sugarcraft gun. I like the sugarcraft gun best. It takes alot less muscle.

i thought that i could save myself a bunch of money by buying a $5 clay gun from michael's to make a rope border for a competition cake. well spending HOURS using this piece of junk, the palm of my hand was red, swollen, and blistered. the fondant got stuck in it many times. and just took soo much pressure to extrude. this year, i figured i would get the sugarcraft gun. boy, i am really disappointed i did not just spend the $4o last year! it is a dream to work with. the fondant flows out of it soo nicely. i have no blisters on my hand! and it took about 5 minutes to do what took over 45 min last year to do the same job! so i would say, BUY THE BETTER TOOL! u can purchase it thru sweet celebrations. i think it cost $34 plus S&H.

Thanks for the site info. I've been wanting to get one, but also didn't know which one to purchase. This thread has been very helpful. I just ordered mine from beryls. icon_smile.gif
