How To Secure Wires In A Cake?

In my white holiday cake, I used gumpaste "posts" to hold snowflakes. Within 24 hours many of the posts had fallen over or broken, even though they had dried for at least a day before being inserted into the cake.

I have seen wires inserted into cake tops holding jewels or gumpaste dots... how do you secure the wires? How do you get them to stay upright and not "cut" into the cake?

I'm doing a topsy/turvy cake next week and would love to try the wire technique, but am afraid of this same problem. Nothing looks worse than gouges in the cake made by fallen decorations.

Help!

do you mean the wires started to lean and moved iwthin the cake itself? could be your decorations on top of the wire were too heavy if you had a particularly delicate cake.

I use bar straws.(coffee straws) I just insert into cake, then put my wire in the hole. You can use drinking straws to, but I like the smaller holes, They seem to not have as much play. You can also wrap the wire with floral tape, to get a snug fit. HTH

Yes, the gumpaste poles fell over and out of the cake or broke. They were only holding gumpaste snowflakes... that would be too heavy?

Thanks for the straws idea. I'll definitely give that a try!

I like the bar straw idea. I would also make sure that your cake is strong enough to hold the wires and not too light. A dense cake would hold them better, and make sure they are in at a good angle that won't tip with the weight on top.
