Hey!!
Calling all FONDANT PRO's.... I'm in desperate need of help! I'm doing a cake for my cousins baby shower. She drew a picture of the design she wants. 12" square on bottom, 8" square on top. Covered in cream colored mmf. Then on top of that a scalloped on each side of the cake & top covered in light pink mmf with light brown dots on each scallop. A ribbon around the tops of both cakes & a lily on top of the cake (which will be fake because I don't know how to make lilies yet icon_sad.gif). Picture attached. I've done fondant cakes but never the scalloped edges. Can ya'll please walk me through it? I'm thinking I need to measure out each side of the cake. Cut the fondant to the measurements I need it & then cut the scallops & attach each side one at a time? Is that even close to doing it the right way? I appreciate any help! Thanks sooo much!! thumbs_up.gif

Make your self a template. Use butcher paper or something similar. Measure the distance around the cake, measure the size of the scallop you want to use, then divide the paper into the correct number of scallops. Cut out the template and place it on the MMF and cut out your scallops. From the drawing it looks like the distance from the cake edge and the bottom of the scallops is 2-3 inches, this will make a good template to work with. Good luck and let's see photos.

Thank you VERY much for the help lapazlady!! I'm taking the wilton fondant class & we've been using templates... I don't know why I didn't think of that. I tend to freak when I've never done a technique, then I can't think without help! LOL icon_smile.gif I might have more questions later! Thanks!

That was very "Toba Garrett" of you Lapazlady! Best way to go, but I would add that you want to make sure the you have the top of a scallop on each corner so make sure when you measure that it works that way- I've done that before and it looks really dorky! icon_cry.gif

Also, measure your height of the scallop to be up under your ribbon so the edges are covered. If you want the edges to be cut the same way and you don't have a cutter, use the end of one of the Wilton flower formers- they work great for that shape!

Ok this overlapping fondant sounds really tricky to me. I can't see it being even at all or the scallops meeting at the corners. I might just paint the scallops on... I'll let ya'll know what the outcome is. Thanks for all the help! I appreciate it sooo much!! thumbs_up.gif

don't worry about it too much- it's a lot easier to cut them out. Just measure the sides of the cake lengthwise, and then cut a piece of parchment, butcher paper or wax paper the right length and width. Use it as a template for your fondant and the divide up the total for each side, ie 10" sides divided into 2" scallops, would give you 5 per side. Just take the end of the flower former and cut the scallops out. Take it easy- it works really well and looks great- and it's a lot faster than painting!

Sugarnut is absolutely right about the top of the scallop being at each corner. And, Sugarnut, I'll take the comment about Toba Garrett as high praise, and get a chuckle at the same time. (I should be so talented)

yea, me, too! Her string work is killer. I saw her at an ICES convention a few years ago, and she did the adding machine tape folded up to measure her sides to mark her string work. I can do it, but not as steady and evenly as her. Something to aspire to! sigh... icon_lol.gif
