I am new to cakes. My grandmother took Wilton cake decorating classes a few years ago. Since then she migrated to Florida with all the other smart seniors. (It gets cold here in Indiana!) I inherited all her Wilton pans, bags, tips, books and other supplies. I have found a new love and am very grateful. I could use some support though. I have questions about dragees and luster dusts are they edible or not? I seem to get conflicting answers. Does any one know for sure?
First let me welcome you to CakeCentral... it's great having you here with us!! This is a wonderful place to come for ideas and help ... congratulations on all the cake pans, books, etc. you've acquired
Some say they are, some say they're not. The NuSilver you use on the dragees is the part that comes into question. I know in other countries, they're classes as edible. Here in the U.S., I think they're classed as non-elible. I'm not too sure on this though... I'm sure there are others here that know more about this...
I recently bought some silver dragees and the lady from the cake store said they were edible. I have read several posts that say they are not. If you are not comfortable...you can always tell people they are just for decoration.
By the way...I used the dragees to decorate a cake I recently did. I ate at least 4 or 5 of them and I did not get sick or anything!
And my daughter probably ate about 20...and she was fine too!!!!
I have no problem with either.. my mom and I used dragees when I was a kid and I use luster dust now.. it is all a matter of comfort and opinion.
