If there has been grease in the bowl? I only have one bowl for my KA and am wondering what I should do in order to make a cake that needs egg whites incorporated into it?

If the egg whites are supposed to be whipped until fluffy and then folded into the batter, you'll need to make them separately. Do the egg whites first and then the cake batter. You can then add the egg white mixture.

Hope this helps.

This is a pain...I am seriously contemplating buying a second bowl for my mixer. When I make my buttercream (or whatever), I cream the shortening first, transfer it to another bowl, clean the mixer bowl thoroughly and mix the whites.

If there is any greasy residue on your bowl the egg whites won't whip. I alway wash my mixer bowl in super hot water with Dawn dish detergent WITH some vinegar in it after every use. Then it is ready if I need to whip up some whites.

I always do my whites FIRST by the way.

I agree- I NEED to buy a second bowl. Kohl's sometimes has them for only $40.

That's what I do and ended up doing today, Beth. Do you add the liquid that's left by the eggs whites when it's time to incorporate them into the batter?

If I'm worried about whipping my egg whites after using a greasy item, I always wipe the bowl with vinger.

If there's grease on your bowl or beaters whites won't whip up. I always wash my bowl and beater/paddle in hot soapy water before I do egg whites, even if I haven't used it recently. I'll look at Kohl's, I need a second bowl for my KA. Thanks for the heads up nglez!

I don't, but, I don't know that it would hurt anything. I'm just "weird" about some things. I have a feeling the OLDER I get......the "quirkier" I'll get....and THAT could get scary! LOLL

after you finish beating the egg whites there shouldn't be any liquid left in the bowl.

Sometimes if you look at the KA website, they will have refurbished bowls for about 1/2 price! I went on their website a while ago (maybe a year.....) to get two more bowls like the ones that came with my mixer, and was looking at the refurbished items. I got two handled bowls for the price of one non-handled bowl! I was pretty excited!

Don't know if they have any right now, but it can't hurt to look.

That's right- it's a sure sign that you over-beat your whites. If you're going to incorporate them into a batter you should shoot for medium/stiff peaks.

Here's a cool video about making Swiss Meringue Buttercream. A little off topic, but just wanted to throw that out there.

Ok - just checked the KA website.....here's what I found:

All bowls are $19.00:
3 qt no-handle bowl (for tilt head mixer)
4.5 qt no-handle bowl (for tilt head mixer)
5 qt handle bowl (for lift style mixer)
6 qt handle bowl (for lift style mixer)

Shipping for up to $49.99 is only 6.95! That would be $44.95 for two bowls, or if you got three bowls it would be $64.95 (shipping is 7.95 for orders up to 99.99).

I hope this helps someone!! I always look here before buying any KA accessories.

where are you finding those prices on the KA website? a single bowl is between $39.99 and $74.99 depending on the model. where do you see 19.99?

Thanks, Judi. I've been wanting another bowl but not badly enough to pay $39.00 since I seldom need it. I just order a refurbished one. Opal

I never beat my eggwhite ahead of the batter. In a way if you let it stand for sometime, the liquid from the beaten eggwhite would separate from th foam. I have two units of KA then I beat the two mixtures simultaneously. Have two bowls at least. Saves you time and washing.
