what is the best way to get mmf black? I'm making an x-box cake for my son's birthday next week and am needing a true black color. Also, anyone have tips for putting fondant on a square cake? I've heard it's difficult to do and just want to plan ahead.

Thanks in advance!

I jsut used the wilton gel? black to get black fondant. It only took a couple of dips with the toothpick. Probably take more if you are making a lot more. I just did the dots for Elmo's eyes. HTH.

Americolor black worked great for my ladybugs. They are on my "bugging me" cake in my photos.

If you start with chocolate fondant, or brown, it's easier to get a black black. You should also color the fondant, and let it sit for awhile. It will deepen in color. This is the same if you wanted to color it deep red.

I also read somewhere here that adding a touch of violet also gives you a "truer" black.

do you own an airbrush? It takes so little paint to get a real strong black from the airbrush...

If you are needing that much MMF I would suggest coloring your whole batch black. You can color your melted MM and it won't take as much hard labor to get it black. Once your melted MM are black then just mix in the PS. The PS absorbs the color so your color doesnt' change.

The black cake in my photos was done this way and it didn't take any extra time to make the black than it does the white.

As for covering a square cake. I always start on the corners then I go the the center top of the sides and work my way down. Seems to work the best this way.

Thanks for the square cake mmf tips and coloring it black. I've only done 1 mmf cake that was white and round so this whole x-box cake was throwing me off.

the websites were great too!
