Does the cake have to be put in the freezer before decorating it?

No, you don't have to freeze the cake before decorating. (I'm not sure if you mean before the fondant or after--but no either way.) You do have to give the fondant something to "stick" to--like buttercream--before you cover the cake with it. (I'm not sure where you are in the process.) HTH

No, I just put a layer of BC on the cake, smoothed it out. Then rolled the fondant and put it on the cake. No need to freeze.

Nope! Fondant is great. You just let your cake cool, put the crumb coat on then cover with the fondant. I try and give as many people this website when using fondant. I don't know if you are making it or if you have bought it but it has the recipe for MMF and she tells you how to cover a cake in it!!!
