I've been asked to make a cake like a camero... but I've never sculpted anything THAT detailed before!! I know some of you have done this, I've looked at some of the pics on CC... does anyone have any tips or hints? Is it best to use white cake for sculpting? How do you make the wheels so they look 'round' and 'real'?? What about the vents that are carved out in the side of the car??? This seems really difficult to me... any help? I've included a picture of a similar car (the customer gave me this picture as a reference to see if I could do it... she'll send me that picture of the actual camero she wants in a few days).

WOW sounds like a task this is as close to a car as I've gotten and this cake was a mess I can't even give you any pointers...

carve with your cake frozen,
use a pound cake type cake or the others will fall apart

To make it look as close to the camaro body shape as possible I would suggest making template and you can carve the profile of the cake from there. If you choose to go with this method, use a serrated knife and freeze The cake to make it a little easier to work with. Also for my Lightning McQueen cake, I used a firmer cake than a white cake.

Some people have used I think it's the NASCAR cake pan to avoid having to carve their cakes. You could try that method instead.

As for the vents, you can use fondant or your butter cream icing to create them.

Here is the Lightning McQueen cake that I carved because they didn't have a cake pan of similar shape.
