Here is a goofy thing I did. I haven't tried coloring the icing yet, but here I go. I brought the color of icing that I wanted to Home Depot. (Bride wanted color to match invitation color). I asked them to scan the color in to their paint computer so I could get the colors that go into it. They scanned it, then printed out the colors for me. Now, this week I get to try to duplicate the color. The colors for the paint were not colors that I would have expected for the invitation or icing.
Other than that, taupe is not a color I have had to work with.
Offhand I would say use lots of dark Vanilla extract. Whenever I've used too much it's been a kind of dark ivory, almost taupe color. Add a smidge of copper (used for fleshtones) and you should be right in there.
Hi,
Here are some links to Icing Mixing Guides..I couldn't find taupe though.

does this help?

maybe you could use the rgb values as a guide to what colors and amounts to add?
Have you tried a light brown and a small amount of grey? That is what I think of when I see taupe.
jescapades: who knew there were so many different types of taupe?? I guess it would depend on which one you actually wanted to make. Sorry I can't be of more help. All of my colors are usually trial and error.
