Hi everyone!! I want to run my pricing on this bridal shower cake by y'all for your thoughts: I have due next weekend a 12 x 18 (4 inches tall) cake in buttercream with an 8 inch heart cake (4 inches tall) on top. The whole thing will be in buttercream with basically BC roses for decoration and a colorflow monogram. Long story but the question is: I am charging $125 for this cake. Is that too much? I can go down to $100. I want to give her a price break because she is a customer of DH, but she was NOT happy with the $125 price although she agreed to pay it. Sooo, what are your thoughts? At this point I'm thinking of just surprising her when I drop it off next week and telling her "just make it $100, I had fun making it." What do you think?

I think the $125 is a deal. That would be my price for only buttercream filling and some buttercream flowers, and a border. Very simple one.

Are you including delivery in this price also?

I also think $125 is the right price. She's going to have close to 125 servings -- at $1/serving. How cheap does she think it can get? Well, there's always Wal Mart.

I agree- I'm afraid if you give her a discount now she'll think she muscled you into it and will try to talk you down in price from now on. If you really wanted to give her a discount, you should have made her aware of it from the start. Don't sell yourself short!

You will regret giving her a discount. I have a few that make comments suggesting they should get a discount because I gave them a price break in the past. They usually become real pains in the rear for some odd reason. I am telling me not to EVER do it again. Yes I resent each one I have done it for!

I told her that she's getting a great deal -- the cake in a bakery would be at least $150 if not more for all that cake AND I'm throwing in free delivery (she's not far from me.) That way I'm happy because I didn't back down and she's happy because she thinks she's getting a great deal...icon_twisted.gif

Maybe throw in a gift certificate for her next order?

Stick to your original pricing. If you give her a discount she will always expect it. Then, she may tell other people that you gave her a discount. How many people do you want to give a discount to?

A 12x18 that is 4" tall, so it's a double layer, right?

If so, that sounds like that the equivalent of 7 mixes (three for each 12x18 layer, plus one for the 2-layer heart?), which is also the amount of mixes I use for a 3-tiered wedding cake, which I get $225 for. As I tell my folks ..... it's the same amount of cake no matter WHAT pan I bake it in.

She's getting a deal.

Yep -- a 12 x 18 x 4 cake with filling PLUS an 8 inch heart on top. With roses around the base of the heart and probably around the base of the rectangular cake (good thing I can make them fast!)

Why give her a discount of any sort...she agreed to the price?? icon_confused.gif I'm sure she'll be glad she went ahead with the order when she sees how beautiful and tasty it is! BTW, I would have charged $175. thumbs_up.gif

if you decide to give her additional discounts... some time down the road when she becomes one of your customers you wish would just buy her cakes from someone else please send me an email to vent your feelings of being unrespected, taken advantage of and wanting to hide from her.

Hmmm wonder how I know these things!

I wanted to give her a discount because she's a good client of my hubby and she seems like a nice lady (although she has a way of getting on my nerves -- I think that's just my impatience though...) In fact, I had originally told her I thought it would be around $100 but I wasn't sure. Then she got on my nerves and I told her it was $125 (which is still a deal.) She wasn't happy about it but who cares. I'm writing her a "bill" at the end which I always give clients and it will say "1 12 x 18 x 4 inch double layer cake with heart cake on top, $175, delivery $10 = $185, discount $60 = $125." Since she agreed to the $125 price already I'm not going any lower. I've found if they think they're getting a deal they may not like paying it but they also know they won't get it any cheaper at a bakery! icon_twisted.gif
