I need help! I finally purchased rice paper, but I have a very dumb question. Is it edible? Easy to use? And what is the best way to lay it on the cake?

Please help, I have to do a Lord of the Rings cake based on a napkin and it is very detailed. This is for the 19th so I have some time.

Thank you all in advance!

I've only used rice paper when I made butterflies. Yes, it is edible and to me did not really have a taste to it. That is the only time I've used it though, sorry I couldn't be more help.

I LOVE rice paper!!! If you look in my photos all the drawings were done on rice paper, the angel, the ballerina and the Christmas photo. A really neat method, is to draw the pic on the rice paper and then color it in with petal dust, gives a neat effect! Good Luck!

I've never used it before but I heard that once you put it on the cake it just melts and you get the lines and colors left from the picture, you could also use edible pencils they have them at every single craft store near the cake department, make your drawing and put it on the cake. You know what I think I 'll use this for all of my writing, I can't get a steady hand to write or draw especially vertically.

Marsha Winbeckler has put together a really helpful book, filled with ideas and techniques for using wafer paper, or rice paper (wafer paper and rice paper are the same thing)

Thanks ladies!

ChrisJ: Thanks for letting me know about the taste...I was wondering if it tasted like anything.

Meghan39: I love the Christmas one! It turned out really nice.

Mamastacy: I ordered mine online with Pattycakes.com I've seen it used a lot here and really wanted to try it, but then didn't know how to use it. icon_redface.gificon_redface.gif

cuillere: Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure if I used frosting (thinned) or what? I don't have any place to purchase cake supplies so I order most online.

Jackie: Thank you for the information. I am going to look the book up and order it. I love collecting cake books!

So what do I do with the rice paper I have now? Do I use frosting and outline with thin frosting? I'm still confused. I'll check the website out that Jackie mentioned.

Thanks a million everyone!

Ii don't think rice paper in the art department is edible. Rice paper is also called wafer paper which is edible. You could still use what you bought by adhering it to a fondant plaque after coloring but tell people it's not edible. If you adhere it to a plaque, you would need to remove it anyway to cut the cake. Check the information on the label to see if it's edible.
