I just got an order in for cake dummies from DAllas Foam , also. A total of 6 dummies, 2 sets for about
$12. Shipping was just about that, too! But still all of that for about $24!!! Came in about a week.
That's an amazing set! I haven't worked with dummies (well, actually I do at work! LOL) but with cakes before, and was wondering, do you have to cover the dummies before you frost them with BC to protect them? Especially since you just want to practice with them. Or because they are that type of styrofoam, and it's the close foam, that you don't need to? Just curious. Thank you.
You don't have to cover with saran wrap...just clean them with soapy water, rinse and wipe dry. ![]()
I have 2 cakes that I did for competition last July still sitting in my house! I slather piping gel all over the dummies and than covered in Wilton fondant (yucky enough to use for dummies, get it with a coupon!) and decorate. They both look as great as the day I finished them. I have them loosely covered to protect from dust. I did do a cake covered in Wilton buttercream but after the competition, I just brought it home, striped it, and washed it off in the sink. Good as new! ![]()
Dummies are great for practice! I use the press and seal on it and it doesn't slip and slide all over the place. The only problem I have is icing the darn thing. I can't get the actual 'cake' to stay in place - too light. Tried putting BC under it, but that made it worse. Any suggestions appreciated. I will definitely have to check out that place, esp. since they have they less common shapes! THANKS!!
do you have a link to this co.??? I can't find them in a search.
sarah- just use a detergent like Dawn. My roller coaster cake in my photos was buttercream. Stripped off the decorations and with a spatula got as much of the BC off as possible and washed the rest off. I haven't stripped my fondant covered dummies and don't plan on it much to my DH's dismay!! I used a hot glue gun to keep my "cake" on the board but an epoxy or possibly even velcro would work as well as duct tape!!
Thanks so much for that tip. I just went and ordered me a bunch too. What a deal!!! ![]()
You just beat me to it!! ![]()

No this is our non commercial site. For our local people to look at our cakes.
When I click on your website, there is a link to "shop" . I found the cake dummies....but, honestly, dallas foam is so inexpensive. I don't know the rules of posting your website, you might want to contact a moderator or Jackie or Heath, but I would assume that if you are selling the same stuff as CC, then it's a no-no.
off to buy velcro to try to get my cake dummies to stick to the board!!!

Ok will do.
The reason they may ask you not to post it is because the shop is what keeps CC free. Not all the members know they started the shop as a way to pay for CC so you can understand why they may not want a competitor to kind of "advertise" on their site. Their goal has always been to keep CC a free place for all decorators and cake fanatics! But you can always talk to Jackie and Heath. They are wonderful, very fair and will give their opinion and reasons for decisions they make. ![]()
Epi,
I was just talking about your store yesterday on another thread.
Your store is very well stocked, very neat and clean. You have a lot more in your store than your web-site. Friendly staff. I just wished you where open longer on Saturday's
It's funny to see you here, I was thinking about taking a ride out to your store tomorrow. You are about 30 miles from me but it's worth the drive.
I noticed you changed your web-site. Maybe it's because I haven't gotten use to it but I liked the old site better. But, whoever does your site does good work.
Of course I purchase from CC first and what they don't have I buy from you ![]()
Does Dallas Foam only ship a certain distance? I am in Mass and I went to there website to order cake dummies, and when I put my zip code in it keeps saying that my zip code is invalid.......
