Order: 3 tiered fondant covered cake in "ivory and gold" with a bead border. No other decoration, how the heck do I put gold in it? I can't get luster dust where I am at and I don't have time to mail order it. I have that crappy wilton stuff in gold.......

Any ideas how I can fulfill this order. I have "Freedom" as to how to do the cake...... although there isn't much to do, they don't want flowers or anything...

What about fancy gold ribbon? or a large gold foil base?

hmm.. since it's a super plain cake, ho about making it a different shape instead of a plain circle? maybe a hexagon or a squared cake? and i don't know since she wanted beads. how about an ivory cake ith gold beads?

I was thinking about the gold beads... BUT I only have the wilton gold shimer dust..... I tried the silver and thought it was useless. Is the gold any better?

I am going to roll out the MMF and use a tiny circle cutter to make a bunch of circles the same size and roll them into balls. Should I immediately roll them in the shimmer dust? Or let them dry a little and roll them in shimmer dust or let them dry completely and roll them in shimmer dust? I don't think I can combine with vodka... has anyone tried vodka and the wilton stuff?

The metallics are generally better with alchohol. And it evaporates quickly. I would try mixing a small amount of dust, with alcohol-one drop at a time. When you have a paintable liquid, try it on a small piece of fondant and see what you get. It should be fine. If it works, make the pearls, let them dry at least a full day or more, then you can drop them into the liquified gold, spin them around, then remove them as quickly as possible.

GREAT! I"ll try that icon_smile.gif I'm sure it will be fine, but I am still nervous....

Do you think I should color the fondant ivory first (for the pearls) and then roll in the gold Wilton stuff or use white?

I'd go with ivory to keep any uncovered areas on the beads to stay in the color scheme and be less noticable.
