fondant is a rolled icing used to cover the cake, sometimes for making figures and decorations. Gumpaste is similar, sugar based, but dries harder and faster. It is generally used for flowers and decorations. It can be eaten, but flowers constructed with wire are not edible.

Is gumpaste mixed up with the fontant (what I mean is do you mix the two together or are they totaly diffrent items)?

They are different items. You can use a 50/50 mix of gumpaste and fondant for modeling or for drapes. It doesn't dry as fast or as hard as gumpaste alone.

Using 50-50 paste is also a great way to learn gumpaste -- it has a slower drying time which allows newbies to learn the techniques before switching to straight gumpaste (which dries very quickly!)
