Allright, I know you all probably think I'm the Question Queen LOL..but I'm self taught and only have you all to depend on.

The cake I'm making for next weekend is supposed to serve 100+ people. I was thinking of doing a 18x26 sheet cake and putting a 2-layer 9" in the middle and making it look like a wreathe. Now, in order to acheive this size of cake, I'm going to have to put 2 9x13's together. Now my question is, #1..should I cut a small amount of the sides and ice them together (I've found it easier to attach with crumbs)?
#2-Do I attach them together on the 9" side or 13" side..does that make sense??
#3- How many cake mixes do you suppose I would need for JUST the sheet cake. It's going to be 2-layer. I was going to do half chocolate, and half yellow. Any thoughts or suggestions on that??

Again, thanks so much for any help you can give..even though my grandmother taught me cake decorating 10 years ago (I was 10 icon_rolleyes.gif ) I've never had to show my work off to so many people that I didn't know, so now I'm getting hit with that anxiety to do this perfect! THANKS!!

Well....I am self-taught like you, so take this for what it's worth. But I think your idea of yello on one side and chocolate on the other is a very good idea. Also, I would ice them and put them together on the 13" side. That way, when transporting, it's not such an awkward size.

..just to clarify...putting 2-9 x 13" together does NOT give you an 18 x 26!! You actually get 18 x 13!

You'll need 1 cake mix per 9x13 pan (4 if double layer). Good luck and make sure and post the pics.

Mrs. Missey, YOU'RE RIGHT!! Geez, I took Trig in high school and I can't figure out arithmatic LOL!! Now I feel silly. Thank you thank you thank you!!

So then how do I get a cake for serving 100+ out of either 9x13's or 11x15's?

Do you have a Wilton yearbook? The cake data guide in the back is invaluable.

A 9" x 13" cake yields 45 "party" size pieces of cake. An 11" x 15" yields 60 servings, and a 9" round yields 24 servings. Two 9" x 13" cakes and a 9" round would put you a little above your target serving goal of 100. icon_smile.gif

i if you are making a "full sheet" cake which is the 18x26 then you will need four 9x13's for just the one layer so in all you will be doing four chocolate cakes and four yellow cakes. And always glue the "long sides" together to get the dimensions you want. soo on the one side you would glue togetther the chocolates on the long sides then you would have an 18x13 now do the same with the yellow and glue the long sides of those "cakes" together to make your full sheet. don't forget lot's of glue in your seams and don't make the frosting too thin or you will have cracks.
Hope that helps

Thank you both!!!

Sherri, I think I will just make the 2 9x13's with the 9" round. Do you think this will look right? Or should I make the 9"round seperate from the sheet cake? UGH this is frustrating!!

chaptlps - writing your name made me realize its "Chapped lips" LOL! Thank you for all the info on gluing them together. I appreciate it..cuz I would have done the complete opposite!! Thanks!!

I put two 10 x 14" cake boards together and a 10" cake circle on top to get a general idea of the overall shape and it will look fine!

Can't wait to see pics! icon_smile.gif
