I'm doing 2 firsts here, first time using royal icing, and first time using Tip#366. My palm trees aren't coming out right!! They are too "puffy" and not flat enought! What am I doing wrong??

Hahahaha! Your title cracked me up because that sounds like someting I would do!
They don't look bad. They will have a completely different look when you get the trunks.

Instead of pulling the tip straight, try to ruffle it, so it will have more of a shape vs straight (pull then stop then pull then stop). HTH and makes sense =)

I don't know if this would help, but what about adding another layer of leaves in between the ones you have.

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif Okay, I think you're right...they DO! (Especially on all that tin-foil! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif )

I think you've made the branches stick out too evenly, like a starfish. A palm tree's branches would naturally fall to one side or the other, like the part in your hair. Just avoid them pointing upwards and instead push them to the sides more:

Wow! You could get arrested for possession with those !!! I got a kick out of your title! I have only made them out of fondant, but maybe if you add a few more leaves to each one and try to get away from the star shape. I bet they will look great when you finish.

I really had a good laugh at the title!! I think that if you don't want to do em over, I would add more of the leaves as a couple people said. Otherwise, if you are gonna try again, Joby1's idea of making it more ruffled would help too=) But I really think it would help just to add more leaves, Jen

What about using the other leaf tips? The 68 or 70? They produce flatter leaves.

Pretty funny stuff!

No, your palm trees do not look like marijuana. Your fronds grow symmetrically from the center, like an umbrella.

Marijuana leaves all grow from the stem base, more like a ping pong paddle than an umbrella.

Don't ask, cuz I won't tell.

are you sure you're holding the tip the right way. The 352 tip is actually held with the points going up and down. Opposite of the way I first thought it got held. Try rotating your tip 1/4 turn and see what the leaves look like.

Funny title!

Good luck! They will probably look fine with a few coconuts and a trunk.

Now THAT'S a great post title! LOL! Actually, they'll look fine with the trunk and maybe another row of leaves, but for future reference, I agree that your spacing is too starlike.

Thanks for the giggle!

Hahaha! This thread made my day! I agree that maybe adding some shorter branches in between the long ones would help. Either way, I think most people wouldnt comment on them with the coconuts and the tree trunk. icon_lol.gif

I agree that it almost looks like you're holding the tip sideways. Also... pot plants don't have leaves that grow all the way around like that. At least, not on the DISCOVERY channel, they don't. icon_razz.gif

You could always use a toothpick when the frosting is wet and add "slits" in the leaves. leave the center line and off both sides just brush the toothpick to almost make it look like a comb?

I stare at the things all day long, but I haven't made them to the exact either.

Okay, hillarious title. I agree with Antonia, let the sides curve down a wee bit and see if that helps.

There aren't supposed to be any coconuts! And the tree itself is just a pretzel.

I'll try ruffling the leaves tonight, but i think it will still look weird.

This is what they're SUPPOSED to look like. thumbsdown.gif Mine don't look like that.

BTW - i'm just judging from pictures! Never seen any in real life! thumbs_up.gif

AHHHH!! To make leaves that look like that you use a petal tip and do it the way you make violet leaves, just make them longer... and dry each leaf individually on the back side of a flower former!

Edited to add: I am sure someone else may have an easier way though!

It looks to me that yours are too narrow. Try fattening them up a little and that might make them look a little like palm leaves. After all we don't want those little ones getting the munchies! Good Luck and if all fails just eat a few and sit back and enjoy!
