What Would You Do??
Decorating By ShabbyChic_Confections Updated 21 Feb 2007 , 5:05am by ShabbyChic_Confections
My SIL called me today to tell me that she gave my e-mail address to a co-worker that wants a wedding cake, I said "great". She came by to pick up my niece that came over to play with my daughter and told again about giving my email to her co-worker and that she asked her if I would charge her an arm and a leg for the cake, that she wanted something simple, my SIL told her that she didn't know.
Now, how much should I charge per serving?? I'm in So Ca and I really don't know how much to charge, I don't want to underpaid myself, so I was thinking $3.50 for BC and 4.50 for fondant, is that ok?
Please give me your feedback.
Thanks.
I can't offer any suggestions as I am not sure what your market is. I would call the bakeries in your area and inquire about their pricing for a simple BC and/or fondant cake. That way you can be sure to be within the competitive market for the area, of course taking into consideration the slight markup for your specialty.
That's what I do, call and get an average pricing median for the area and then go from there to see if it would be worth your time.
Oh, and don't be afraid to mark up slightly if you feel strongly about it ~ there is a price for creating a one of a kind specialty cake that you may not be able to get at a local bakery.
Hope this helps some... ![]()
I agree with the last post, you should do a search online for your area, and see if any of the cake websites post prices if not call a few bakeries in your area and inquire on the prices.
Do you know how much it costs you to make a cake? I am a firm believer that you really need to know how much you are spending on a cake (an all things to do it) to know how much to charge.
I agree with TexasSugar....market comparison is one thing, however, you may find that they can charge less than you because their cost is lower dur to bulk buying, etc. You can check the market (and you should), but you also really need to know what your cost/break-even is so you'll know you're making a profit, and what kind of margin you'll have!
I will call some bakeries, I think I'm in the correct price range, I just want to make sure since she already asked my SIL if I would charger an arm and a leg for it since she doesn't want to spend a lot and she want's somthing simple. I smell champagne taste in a beer budget... ![]()
