I have a customer that would like me to make a basket cake. I want to use an oval as the shape of the cake but.....I don't know how to form the handle. I think I should use gum paste but should I make it into a rope and braid it or what???

She wants the sides of the cake done in basketweave which isn't a problem...it's just the handle and then of course how do I attach the handle to the cake???

If you have done a basket cake would you PLEASE share a picture so I can see it???? PPPLLLEEEEEAAASE?????

TIA

Chrissy

I read on here that some have used wire to help keep the shape of the basket handle. You could use your gumpaste to make the ropes, then braid it around the wire. Just a thought, Jen

How about making an arch in the size you need with , and let it dry, when is hard roll a thin roll of gum paste around it. make it long enough that you can stick it all the way thru the cake.

You could use the candy melts and melt them down and do dots on waxed paper, let dry, flip and do on the other side
I've done this before and it worked nicely, it was for a smaller cupcake but i don't see why it wouldn't work...
good luck

You could braid a rope of fondant and shape it and let it dry.

I've been wondering about this too. I'd like to make a basket for Easter.

Hello,

I have made only 2 Easter baskets. My handles were made from royal icing. I measured the width of the cake and drew an arch on a piece of paper. I followed that arch with a rope pattern. I let it dry and then flipped it over and made another rope pattern on the other side. Let that dry. Now I had a handle you could hold in your hand.

Since I'm new to this, I hope you can see the few cakes in my profile - there is one Easter basket cake in there.

I hope this helps.

I make my handles out of candy clay. They set quickly and easilty and are very sturdy. I take two long log rolls and twirl them together, shape them the width that i need then stick toothpicks in the ends. Put them on parchment paper on a cookie sheet in the fridge to harden. It only takes a few minutes, Then when I need it, I pull it out and place it on the cake.
I have two basket cakes posted if you want to see how they turned out.

Ladies,

Thank you so much! I can't even tell you how "stuck" I get sometimes. I can see what I want to do in my mind....it's just figuring out "how to do it"....I get stuck....LOL

I had never even given thought as to make the handles long enough to insert time into the cake....... icon_redface.gif

Thanks for the pictures it really helped.

It's great to know that I have a board to come to so I can get my mind in gear! Thanks again

Howdy,

A little side note: If you like, you could put lollipop sticks on the handle ends, this way you could insert the lollipop sticks into the cake. I didn't hear about that trick until months after I made my baskets. That would have been nice to know.

Hope this is a little trick you might consider.

Thanks again.

Lollipop stick!! I love that idea. That seems like it would really work well.

How would I fasten the lollipop sticks to the handle.....would royal icing work or since I'll be making the handle out of gumpaste would I just be able to attach it with a "glue" like vanilla extract....vodka......???

Thanks for this tip...I really like it thumbs_up.gif
