You really should use the candy colourings. Some folks tell me they have used small amounts of the regular colourings to colour the melts, but it has never worked for me, the chocolate or candy melts seize. According to the manufacturers of the candy melts and the manufacturers of the real chocolate melts, the liquid in the colours will make the candy seize and I find that to be true.

I'm one of the ones it's worked for icon_smile.gif When making pastels, I use a small amount of Wilton without any problems. If I was going for primary colors though, I'd definitely use the oil-based candy colors.

Lisa, I only use Meckens or for chocolate real chocolate ones, usually Neilson's available in Canada or other real chocolate wafers.
Are you using the Wilton ones? Just curious because I am wondering if you can get away with them but not the Merckens.

Yes...I only use the Wilton candy melts. Even they say to only use the oil-based colors but I've gotten away with using the regular gels in very small amounts. It may not work with the higher quality melts though.

Haha, well, I buy the Merckens because they are much cheaper here and the Neilson ones are even cheaper. But the higher quality ones can run fairly high and generally I find children don't really care. Adults do though, especially the one munching on them while they are melting, haha! Don't tell!

I buy the Wilton for the same reason. They're at all the shops here. I'd have to mail order any other kind. I like the taste of the white but the chocolate ones are weird. They take a long time to melt in your mouth and it can take a few secs before you even taste them.

You would...believe me! I refuse to eat the chocolate ones but my kids love them. Like you said, they really don't care. Throw sugar on a rock and they'll try to eat it LOL! Maybe that's just my kids icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi,

I mistankingly pick up my black soft gel paste instead of my candy color and let it rip into my candy melts the other day...big mistake....I got a big grainy clump! I do like to use the precolored melts now because you get the same color everytime. It makes life simpler.

I am another one it works for. I have only colored smaller amounts at a time (I usually work out of baby food jars), and I too use Wilton candy melts. I agree the candy colors are better and you do get a richer color using less, but hey it was what I had on hand.
