All of my cakes, so far, have been for family or very close friends who basically paid for supplies (this is more a hobby). Someone has asked me to make the Baby Belly Shower Cake (in my pics) but I have no idea what to charge. I need a lot more practice before I get serious about selling cakes but I would like to at least get a little $ for my time.

It's an 11x15 white/cheesecake flavored cake with strawberry buttercream (sb preserves w/buttercream dream icing) filling and buttercream dream icing. The body is also cake (on a separate board for the mother) covered in MMF. FYI - our local bakery will not work with fondant!

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. [/code][/i]

Holy Fazoli! I got $40 for that cake from my best friend! icon_redface.gif It cost less than that to make but that's what she gave me. I was satisfied....but maybe I'll get a little greedy!

Thanks for the info - of course, in my area - that may be excessive but I really need to find a happy medium.

I think your cake is beautiful!.....I would probably charge about$60-$70 for it. An 11x15 is a big cake and the shapes on top are cake too, so it would serve a lot of people, plus you did fondant.

As someone who's also a hobbyist, I would probably charge more like $50-60 (but that's also probably on the low end). To figure my prices, I made an excel sheet I use to enter all my ingredients/supplies, and then I multiply it by 2.5 or 3. I used to just double my cost, but now that I just had a second child my time is valuable! icon_biggrin.gif

for an 11x15 sheet cake I charge $45.00 but add the belly on top with the fondant *top* that adds more to it.

Remember, you are not competing with the supermarkets or the wholesale stores. LIke Earlene says the ingredients on making the cake are nominal..its the design, the artistry where the cost comes in.

Of course if you are doing it as a hobby or just for fun and at least covering your costs (which I do sometimes for family and friends) then be as creative as you want. Good practice. What I do is tell the person I'm giving the freebie/lower price to, "If someone asks, please don't tell them how much you paid for it, because this design really goes for $xyz"

I don't sell ANY cakes for less than $2.50 per serving, and this cake of yours would easily serve 40-50 people, so I'd charge at least $100 for it. It's lovely btw!

OH yea,I would charge 75-100 for that cake. Like they said cost multiplied by 2.5 is a good rule of thumb. Think about not only cost of ingredients but time to run around to get the stuffplus your gas and light and time away from your family.

Thank you all for the comments. I have the cost sheet (by ingredients) that someone posted a while back and will most likely use that. She may decide to go with something less expensive, but that's OK too. That cake was a lot of work......I was pushing cupcakes anyway since my hubby is working on a stand!!!!!
