Are there any tips you guys can give me on this subject? I had my course 2 , second class last night and my birds stank!!! I threw them away this morning and am going to do them over at home for my cake that is due in 2 weeks. Is it easier with RI? They just don't dry as hard? The outlining went ok I guess but when I filled in it just covered over all the detail lines. My instuctor said that happens a lot and I could just go back later and add them but I would really like to get it right and not have to add later. TIA
Don't worry about it, the first never turn out perfectly. I always suggest my students go home and redo them because it is easier after you do it before and you don't have someone watching over your shoulder.
Working with the color flow and royal icing is pretty much the same. They both do the same things and both dry fast, so I really can't say one is easier than the other. I usually do mine in royal icing because I always have MP on hand, and don't use enough of the color flow mix to buy it to have on hand.
Some new things I learned from other WMI's is that you can double line the front wing, so that the line does not get covered up with flooding and it gives the wing a little more of a 3d effect. You can also re-pipe that second like after you filled it in with the thinned down color flow.
The second thing I learned, which I really like, is that you can make a second wing. Trace just the front wing, outline it, except for the portion that doesn't not have a line across itt, and then fill it in. After it has dried you can glue it to the whole bird using a little royal icing and you have a 3d wing on the bird.
I'll try to remember to take a picture of the one I have a home to post on here.
If you have any more questions about it, don't be afraid to ask.
Thanks texassugar!! I'm looking forward to trying it again! The 3-D wing sounds cool too! I would def love to see the pic! Thanks again and hopefully I don't drive you nuts with ????? LOL ![]()

Here is the final cake.
Something i think i will try next time, is using tip #5, instead of 2 or 3. That way you can put more "filling" in to make them thicker. They were just really really thin, and in this case, the neck and tail were too unstable. I did 3, and all 3 broke in the same places, the neck and tail. If you look, you can see the head is "glued" back on, and no matter how i tried, the tail just wasn't going back on.
So i told everyone that 300 million years ago the T-rex and Brontosaurs got into a fight, and T-rex won. ![]()
Good job! Good story too!! Did you have to do anything special to get them to stand up??
