I made a batch of this last night using the recipe posted here and it came out so sticky. I added about a cup extra of powdered sugar until i could knead it into a ball, and let it rest overnight.
Got up this morning, and it was still really sticky - really hard to knead in color because it kept sticking to me.
I tried making figures anyway, and I got one to turn out (not sure how it will dry) but when I try to build my snowman, the fondant is too soft and the layers collapse on themselves.
It stays really sticky unless I have a constant layer of powdered sugar on it while I mold/knead.
Any ideas as to what I did wrong???
Thanks!
Don't know what happened unless it's just humid there. I made some recently that turned out far sticker than before. When that happens and no amount of powdered sugar helps, either just roll it out on corn starch, which will dry it out a bit. If your modeling it, knead in a small amount of corn starch. Also, for modeling, add a little gum-tex for quicker drying time.
One more thing...
I read somewhere that the amount of corn starch in powdered sugar varies, so that may be part of your problem too.
It's usually between 1-3 % that's added to icing sugar.
Just like alimonkey said add some gumtex to your fondant, or better yet make a gumpaste dough and flavor it with vanilla, that's what I do. To make figurines you need to make all the components let them dry until they can withstand pressure then you glue them together with royal icing or stack them up, you can also give the figurine more support by inserting tooth picks between all the parts you are connecting. For the fondant part, I have the same problem sometimes it's sticky, sometimes it's hard and cracks, it just has a mind of its own and I ve been working with fondant for a while but now I switched to marshmallow fondant MMF, Oh my God the best very easy to work with. I don't add any powders to my working surface I only use Crisco it doesn't stick, it doesn't get hard and doesn't cracks it's the best.
Thanks all! I added some cornstarch and kneaded it in for a while...then remade my figures and they're working! We'll see if my little man stands up when he's done drying, but I added a bunch of pieces of spaghetti throughout him, and left enough at the bottom to stick him into the cake...hopefully that'll work!
I'll definitely try some MMF next time. I used Wilton's for the last two cakes, but didn't like the taste...couldn't figure out if it was just supposed to taste weird or what, until I read here that everyone hates the taste!
Thanks again!
