I am having the worst time with my black fondant. (This is for a dummy cake, but hopefully will turn into orders.) I havent been able to find chocolate fondant in a box so I made a batch of regular choco fondant & a batch of MMF to test which will work better.
No matter what I do, the fondant becomes dry & looks awful when I finally get it stretched to put on the cake dummy. I am needing to make at least a quarter sheet if not a half sheet cake size dummy.
Any suggestions? I need it to look as smooth as possible w/o breaking or wrinkling as I will be adding layers, piping, etc etc.
TIA

Well, if nobody is going to be eating it, I would go with Wilton fondant and a lot of black mixed in, of course you will have to add more powdered sugar to make up for the amount of moisture the black adds to it. BUt I find, if I stir the black colour well before needing it into a small amount of fondant, get that amount a good black then mix it into the white fondant and continue adding black colour, it comes out a great black and is easy to work with. Just my experience with black fondant.

THX Squirrelly! Any tips on edible black fondant? lol I work with my husbands Marine Corps unit & the guys found out I do cakes. So they have basically dared me to the challenge of doing a Dress Blues bust. I have never done the sculpted cakes so I started on the dummy. ![]()
I will check out the wilton fondant this weekend. ^crossing fingers it won't dry out as bad as my last attempts^

Well I know people here like to start with the chocolate fondant, but I have always just coloured the white to get black. I find that I get a truer black using white to start. So I would get a better tasting fondant and go with that, whatever you can get your hands on. IF they are not going to eat it, I would go with the Wilton. If they eat any black fondant, they are going to get blacky bluey teeth and it will also hhmn, nice way of putting it, come out eventually. Heehee, learned that when I used royal blue fondant, it is a bit of a surprise, haha!
