Rusty Flowernail -- Anyone Else Had This Problem?

Okay, I love the flower nail trick, and I use it all the time, but I've found that the metal around the base (underneath) is chipping and getting a rust-like appearance. I replace the flower nail as soon as I see this happen, but I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. I wash the flower nail as soon as I take it out of the cake, and I either air dry it or dry it with a towel.
What can I do to prevent the metal from chipping and the rust-like appearance?

That just happened to me. I was all ready to bake my 12x18 sheet cake and when I went to get my nail to use it was all rusty. I spent about 10 minutes trying to wash it off, but it didn't work! I didn't want to use it for in my cake, so I guess I'll have to buy a new one. I hope someone knows a way to prevent this from happening because I don't want to keep buying new nails![]()
cut a square of parchment and poke the nail through it then pour the batter ontop.
Thanks for this thread Sarah! I just bought 2 new nails today. Guess I'll start using parchment! ![]()
I have had this problem as well, but I tried a few different experiments and I found that you cannot let the flower nail soak in water for long and when you are done washing, dry it completely with a cloth, do not let it air dry.
I had the same problem. You have to dry it completely!
