I am making my first "big" tiered fondant cake for a baby shower on Sunday. I have been working on the fondant bown for the top, but when I roll it out, everything I have read says to roll it on cornstarch or confectioner's sugar. Either way, the tinted fondant looks "dusty" How do you guys take care of that? Or am I just doing it wrong? Thanks!

That was a fondant "bow" not "bown"-- sorry-- it has been a long day. : )

roll it without sugar or cornstarch. You can use shortening on your work space, or use a plastic rolloing sheet.

If you roll out on cornstarch (a drying agent), you'll need to brush it off and it may stay dusty. With PS, after a time, the PS seems to meld into the fondant and seems less dusty.

To avoid the problem all together, you can roll out on a piece of vinyl with a smear of crisco on it---no dust, nice shine.

I use crisco only...especially on darker colors....with white or really light colors, I use ps.

Thanks to the original poster and you who have replied. I had that same problem and was quiet disapointed with my color fondant. Now I get it.

I roll mine between sheets of silicon baking paper. I attach the paper to a board with some graphic art clips, to get a really good grip put a bit of paper towel under the silicon paper too. Works a treat. Just rub your fingers on a cornflour cloth bag thingy when you want to mold the shape. You also just put the paper back over the fondant you have rolled but not cut out yet and it doesn't dry out. I have also discovered that when adding colouring to the fondant or gumpaste if you use vinyl gloves it doesn't stick to, or colour your hands. Vinyl works much better than latex.
