Now that I am getting more interested in gumpaste I was wondering what kind everyone prefers. I have been just adding some tylose powder into mmf, but i am not sure I am adding the right amount. ( I dont know if I am adding too much, sometimes the colored looks sort of whitish like it is cracking or something.) Anyway wondered what kind/brand was the easiest to work with (recipes for homemade, mixes, premade)?

I make mine from a recipe I got off of Scott Clark Wooley's website (also in his book, which is wonderful): www.cakesbydesign.cc

I recommend you buy a package of ready-made so you can see how it is supposed to feel. Wilton's is good, but i found it needs a bit of shortening in each lump you pull to work with. Once you are comfortable with what it can do, then making it is the best. There is another recipe and instructions at nicholaslodge.com That is the one I generally use.

I agree with JoAnnB, use the premade or the Wilton mix to get the feel of it, then make your own. I buy Gum-Tex and Glucose (from Wilton) and use the Wilton recipe (included on both products).
When you make it yourself you'll notice it's easier to work with (texture just seems nicer) and doesn't dry out as fast.
When you're working with the gumpaste, use powdered sugar if it's a little sticky, and shortening if it's about right or a little dry. The shortening will keep it from drying out as fast, but make sure you keep any that you're not currently working with covered.

I make the Nick Lodge recipe. It's really good.

I've never made gumpaste, but the only thing I've bought has been from a local bakery.
