Oh my Golly icon_eek.gificon_surprised.gificon_cry.gif
I just checked my pantry and ALL 8 of my jars start with 2111.
Can you tell we love PB here. I hope my Publix takes them back without a receipt (who keeps receipts on PB just in case there's a recall!).

Thanks for posting this! Thankfully no GV or Peter Pan in my cupboard...

Just a caution to all that have eaten it. I have heard that salmonella can show up up to TWO weeks after eating contaminated product. So watch everyone in the family that ate any bad peanut butter for the next couple of weeks and if any illness shows up make sure to head to the doctor to be on the safe side.

Going to call the store I bought it from today. I don't like any other PB but I'm fearful now to eat Peter Pan again. I guess this kind of scare does that to you. icon_sad.gif So Jiff has less sugar... I should be eating that! icon_smile.gif I love PB!! Hopefully no one else will get sick. Have there been any deaths? Gosh I hope not!

This is just to wierd I was just getting ready to post about this. I had bought 2 jars a Christmas time. And had noticed the first few number were the same. Only because one was Chuncky and one was creamy. They are the Great Value Brand BIG JARS. I bought them to make Christmas goodies with. I did make Chocolate no bakes and gave them away. And we ate the rest of the creamy for sandwiches. And I also ate the chuncky. I was on meds for another illness and side affects from that drug were stomach cramps and the other stuff. I thought it was weird that all my family was experiencing the same symtoms as me. But there were stomach illness going around. But now maybe it was just the peanutbutter. My DD ate PB sandwiches everyday. And this is very scary to know it was the peanutbutter icon_cry.gif And DS did the dunk the chocolate in the peanutbutter and had cramps. Now maybe I can get his absences excused. Cause he was in the bathroom thumbs_up.gif And his Principal is being a pain about him going to the bathroom alot. I guess I will be calling the school tomorrow thumbs_up.gif

I got the warning from a friend yesterday morning by email and immediately forwarded it on to everyone on my list. Didn't think to check mine until I started getting return emails saying they had some. Sure enough, I checked my pantry and there was a jar. Luckily, I had been given a big can of commodity peanut butter before Xmas and I had not opened the Peter Pan.

I think it is a shame that we have to mail the lids in. At the price of postage I'm not sure it's worth it.

I wouldn't boycott Peter Pan. It's just one of those things that happen. If we boycott everything that has a problem, we'll be starving eventually. icon_lol.gif It does tell me one thing though--Great Value peanut butter is made by the same company that makes Peter Pan.

I'm beginning to wonder if part of this stomach virus that has been going around could be something due to this.

If you have some of this peanut butter, I'd suggest that before you pay for postage to mail the top of the jars to ConAgra, that you check with the store where you purchased it and see if they are giving refunds. I called Farm Fresh today and they are accepting them and giving you the option of a refund or exchange. So, maybe your store will also accept the jars and you don't have to worry with mailing the lids. My store said that you didn't need the receipt. Good luck.........

I had a jar with the 2111 code. We and my grandchildren had eaten sandwiches from this jar this week. My Publix will take the jar back for a refund, but I'm keeping the peanut butter for a couple of weeks in case any of us gets sick. Then, I will have my jar tested to see if it is infected. No way I'm not holding on to the contents of this jar until some time has elapsed. Then, I'll take it back for a refund and buy Jif, which I almost always do anyway. Bull

I just read that the same company, ConAgra, is recalling some Banquet spaghetti and meatball meals. Thankfully I don't have any of those but if you do, go to their website and get the numbers that are being recalled. Supposedly, it's a different issue altogether and isn't related to the peanut butter but it can't be good to have two separate recall food issues in one week!

I had actually quit buying ConAgra products for a while a few years back, because there was a problem with this company. We have started back buying their products because we assumed as long ago as it has been that it would be OK now. I think I'm off of ConAgra products again!!

Sysco called me today since I had a Peter Pan purchase in my records. I bought a case of the big 6 lb cans a year ago. I still have 3+ of those cans left. The rest have been distributed all over god's green earth in hundreds and hundreds of peanut butter cookies! I must have lucked out and got a batch that was ok!

Oh man!! my 6 year old son eats peanut butter sandwhiches every day for lunch, and sometimes another after school. He has been awful sick this year, since school started. He has vomited several times at school and has had to stay home from school several days. I just checked the 6 lb peanut butter can that I bought for my baby boy for his lunch and it is peter pan #21111

what should I do? should I take him into urgent care?
thanks, and I will be watching for an answer.

For your peace of mind you could get him checked out. I don't know about urgent care unless you think he could dehydrated. Has he had running poo lately??

Melody, is your son currently showing signs of illness? If he is then I personally would not hesitate to take him to the Dr., especially since he eats so much PB and has been sick a lot with stomach issues. Let us know and I'll have you in my prayers.

thank you guys!

he seems fine right now.
I may take him in the morning to urgent care before I go to work. that really explains a lot of things. I thought he was sicker than normal.

good to know that its just peanut butter, we can throw that out.

thanks

I'm sure most would agree take your son to Urgent Care now. It is not worth taking a chance.

Urgent Care isn't as scary as it sounds. It's just a place you go when your doctor isn't available and it's not life threating like a heart attack.

You would feel awful if you didn't take him and he got worse.

Butternut, it does sound like that was why your family was sick. I hope it's passed for all of you.

Shotcake, what other things have you heard about Conagrc?

I think after this there won't be a problem with Peter Pan. You can be assured they have corrected the problem. This could happen to any company.

The symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps from 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illiness usually lasts 4-7 days. Most persons can recouperate without treatment, but if diarrhea persists should seek medical attention as this will cause dehydration and other problems. Salmonella is a group of bacteria that are microscopic living creatures that pass from the feces of people and animals. Contaminated foods usally look and smell normal. They are often of animal origin, beef, poultry, milk and eggs, but all foods can become contaminated. Cooking of raw foods well will kill salmonella. The things you have to be careful of are eating meats that are not cooked well, eggs like in raw cookie dough, some icings made with raw eggs etc....How many eat the cookie dough, and the cake batter? The young, old and persons with immune problems, can be at risk more then others. Touching your animals, especially those that have had diarrhea can be passed along to your children, or to you. The rule is always to wash your hands with soap and water. Since we know it comes from feces, someone that did not wash their hands or some animal's feces found its way to the peanut butter....Ugh!!!!

I see a LOT of you guys are tossing your 2111 coded PB jars in the trash...YOU CAN TAKE THEM TO THE STORE AND GET CASH BACK! I had 3 jars, all used (different flavors) with no receipt...and I got $6 and some change back. (I already spent it on tips)icon_redface.gif
I know it's not much, but don't throw $$$$ in the trash. icon_cry.gif

Melody, I would have my son checked, but I would, also, have the peanut butter checked for Salmonella. Everyone, don't throw away your jar of peanut butter or take them back to the store. Hold on to them in case someone turns up sick with Salmonella. You need proof as Salmonella can come from many sources.

That's what I was thinking. What if you got sick and they didn't think it was salmonella. If you had thrown the jar away, there would be no way of checking it for sure. I wonder how long ago this contamination occured? I haven't purchased peanut butter since a long time before Xmas and when I dug back in the pantry there was a jar with the 2111 on it. Luckily, I didn't have any opened.

WOW! Think about how many people have been affected by it and not known what it was! I would never have dreamed that peanut butter could have salmonella. I associate it with raw chicken!! Learn something new everyday.

Definitely save the can... there's a lot # that they know is connected to the food poisoning. Important to have that proof with you.

Diane - I am the same way. I go way out of my way to make sure that the kitchen stays sanitary especially when I'm dealing with meat and especially chicken. I make double sure that meats and poultry are thoroughly cooked, etc. I haven't made the IMBC in fear of not cooking the eggs long enough to ward off any salmonella and yet here it is in peanut butter. Never would have thought of that. Now, according to this morning's newspaper, cataloupe distributed by Dole has been found to contain salmonella. UNREAL!!

I cannot believe that the school allowed them to pass out anything made with peanut butter after this has been on the news for two days. It would not have been a problem here as no one is allowed to bring any homemade food to pass out at school. All treats must be individually wrapped and purchased at the store.

I heard about the recall and didn't think much about it because I thought the 2 6# containers I bought last month from Sam's Club were Jiff. After reading all the posts I figured I better go look...it's Peter Pan with the 2111 code. I don't remember if I any of us had any symptoms after eating any of it or not, but I called about returning the product and they said just bring it back with or without the receipt. They will exchange it for Jiff or give a refund.

I hope the PB I used for the cookies I made at Christmas for a corporate account didn't have that code (I didn't hear anything about a problem) but....I'm sure glad I have liability insurance. You never know what could happen...

I think the company would want you to throw it out or take it to the store. If your family got sick you would have no proof where it came from.

For all of you at one time or another worked in the food industry, how many times did you see fellow workers go to the bathroom and not wash their hands. I know I have.
