When you do the paper towel method to smooth out your bc does your paper towel leave abit of a pattern in the icing. The Viva paper towel I bought has abit of a texture to it so it leave the imprint on the icing. I did notice that it does smoothe out better that parchment paper but I don't want the texture on it. Do you guys just leave the texture on it or is there a way of smoothing it out even more? Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm not sure if it's a Canada thing or what, but my Viva in the USA has no pattern.

Not sure you can get the same kind of Viva that we get in the States.... Does your Viva have a smooth side? My friend in Australia can't get the smooth Viva.
Might be the problem?

I was kind of wondering if it is different in the states. I want it nice and smooth. Alot of people say that is how they get it nice and smooth but I never saw an impression on the cake. Maybe I will have to buy some from the states and only use it for when I make cakes. What a pain in the back end!!

JaniceCold, I use the blue shop towels (like strong paper towels) from Canadian Tire and I think Walmart might have them (automotive)
They are patternless and work really well.

I often use just plain old computer paper for the top of cakes...that is my preferred method for cake tops..can get them smooth as glass!

JaneK, you find that they work better than parchment paper? I will have to go and take a look at Canadian tire. I never would have thought of that kind of towels but it is worth a try. I also would not have thought about using computer paper. Thanks for the tips!! Any other ideas out there that people use?

the blue shop towels are just great!!!

I like computer paper far better than parchment for smoothing....when I see the paper getting greasy, it is always sort ot thrilling because when you look under the paper, it is beautiful and smooth...
cheap thrills..... icon_biggrin.gif

I haven't had a problem with that until now. This roll I have going now does leave an imprint, but the previous roll didn't. Maybe it's just the batch?

Maybe I should buy another bunch and see what happens or maybe I will just get the blue towels that JaneK had suggested. I guess I will see. Thanks all!!
