I made this cake (see below) and after I took the picture I put the tissue back inside the loops, put the cake in my covered cake carrier, and put it in the cold garage (live in NJ) overnight. When I went to serve it the next day (yesterday) I took the tissue out and within minutes the bow loops collapsed. Does anyone know what I did wrong?

How far in advance did you make your bow? The loops need to dry for several days before putting on the cake. If you placed it on the cake right away and covered it the bow may have picked up moisture from the BC which could have caused it to collapse.

What kind of fondant did you use? When I did my present cake for my Wilton 3 course we did the bow, put the paper towel in it and I put it in my cake carrier and left it in the house. It was at room temperature. Unfortunately, I don't really have an answer maybe someone else here at CC will have some idea. Oh, and welcome to CC!

I agree. I think this is what happened.

Fondant take longer to dry and tends to pick up moisture very easily.

I mix mine with gumpaste for strength and a faster drying time.

This is why I use gumpaste rather than fondant for bows. Once the gumpaste is dry it stays dry, where fondant seems to absorb moisture from the air. Maybe the container you used created moisture, or maybe the air was damp in the garage?

Yup! That's what must have happened. I made the bows and let them sit for an hour or so then put them on the cake. I thought they would just dry on the cake....didn't realize they'd pick up moisture from the buttercream. Thanks for the replies....live and learn!

judyx, welcome to the board! You'll learn quite a lot here. There are so many wonderful and talented people willing to share their techniques and certain secrets. It's such a wonderful learning experience and a great community.

Just curious, what part of NJ are you from? I'm in Somerset County - Bedminster/Far Hills area.

Again, welcome and I'm glad you got an answer to your question.

-Grace
