Need some advice from those who have bought large bags of powdered sugar(50#bag). I have never bought this much at one time and was wondering how to store this, am not sure if it has to be refig or not or should I break this down and put in containers. Also I noticed on the front of the bag when I got home that it states (constarch added to prevent caking), what does this mean, thanks![]()
I would think you could go to your home improvment store and buy those big gallon containers and store it in those..

All powdered sugar has some cornstarch in it.
I always use powdered sugar to sweeten whipping cream because the cornstarch in the powderwed sugar stabilizes the whipped cream.

i used to work at a bakery and we always got sugar in really large bags and they were jsut put into clean plastic containers...like the rubbermaids
personally i like to keep it in the bag and put it in the box, it's just easier to clean and not as messy...but i guess if you're at a bakery and u have a cleaning staff...you dont really care
you can get it at those wholesale places like Costco or Sam's Club...
I've never seen it here in bags that large, but with the way prices of things have gone up so much here, I'd buy it if I could save money! I wonder how long it would stay good after opening? We have a lot of humidity here too ![]()
I buy the 7lb bags from Sam's Club...haven't seen any larger bags than that...where in the world did you find 50 lb. bags?
I store my sugar in the tall round containers that I brought from Wal-Mart with no problem going stale.

Buy a large Rubbermaid tote box. Find two large plastic bags. Place the icing sugar in one of The bags and knot it then put it in the other and put another knot in the top.
You can find boxes of icing sugar that does not contain cornstarch. But the most common types usually have between 1 to 3 % cornstarch added. This is suppose to prevent the icing sugar from getting lumpy and hard.

I found the 50# bag local, Kelly Foods, I believe they supply food items to local resturants and such. Every year my mil has me go there and buy her pecans and black walnuts for her Christmas candy making. They sell any food item so I just ask them if they sold powdered sugar and they said yes in 50# bag for 22.00 dollars (Dominos) so I thought I would save a lot of time like so many others running out to the store, so when I got home I thought how in the world am I going to store this. Thanks everyone![]()
If you can get Bulk 6x Powder Sugar that is the best for your icing. Here is a blurb to back up my statement above from The Sugar Bible. As you can see the finer it is the more corn starch they need to add to make it hopefully not lump. At that point it states that it is then less suitable to use for non cooked items. 6x and 4 x are commercial grade and will make a better icing. Hope this helps all of you with your icing endevors.
"As might be expected, the finer the granulation, the greater the tendency of the sugar to lump, which explains why cornstarch is added to absorb any moisture from the air before the sugar can. The cornstarch adds what is perceived as a floury taste and makes powdered sugar less suitable than granulated sugar for use with ingredients that are not to be cooked. Powdered sugar comes in four degrees of fineness: 10xx, the finest; 10x, available in supermarkets; and 6x and 4x, both of which are available commercially."
At Sam's Club and Costco here they have the 7lb ones and the 50lb ones.

Can you tell me the brand name of the 50#- powdered sugar? At our BJ's or Costco they have a brand name that I am not familiar with and I'm afraid to buy the 50# and find out that it does't work as well. TIA
