I think your "shaky" fondant just adds to the cuteness (if that's a word) of this cake! Great job! I've been afraid to try this one. I read the instructions posted here, but haven't had the gumption to test it out yet. Did you use the instructions on CC or something else?
I love everything about your cake, the way it's tilted, the way its decorated it looks absolutely great! Nice job!!
Well aren't you just something PerryStCakes!!! I love your take on the tiltled cake...don't ever doubt yourself, you can certainly hand with the best of them! Great job!!
Thats a great cake! Great job! How hard was it to construct? ive been itching to try to make one, but im scared! lol!
Thanks for sharing your cake! I like the design very much... did you create it or borrow the idea? Also, did you use special pans to do this cake? I think for your first attempt you did an awesome job! : )
Cute!!!! I'm going to try one for my girl's b-day next wk, Hope mine turns out as nice as yours!
You go girl! There is no way I could use fondant scraps to cover a cake and have it look like anything but frankenstien. Love the color and pattern choices. I would just suggest making the top tier wider to keep it in the same family of shapes as the other two tiers. Doing that will give you more of a tilted looks. Wonderful first try.

..here is a link the some instructions that are posted on this website:

That is most excellent! Love your colour choices. The only critique I would give is that the middle layer should not have repeated the bottom one's stripes which are quite lovely. Perhaps checks or dots instead...
But congrats on your first whimzy. Looks awesome!
Great first try, I think it is so cute. One day I hope to work up the nerve to try one of these.
Wilma
Thanks guys!
I followed the instructions from the article on this site. No special pans - just plain old round ones.
I didnt want the first attempt to be on a client - I was unsure of how the mechanics would work out on a cake like this - but it's actually pretty stable!
Your cake looks great! I am going to do one for this weekend, for a baby shower. One question though...I've noticed that everyone seems to be using MMF or fondant to cover the cake. I am still not too crazy about working with the MMF. Can this be done in buttercream, any tips? All advice GREATLY appreciated. I've read the article on construction, just a little timid about doing it myself! Also, how to transport? I will be delivering, I don't trust anyone else to drive it!
Just to answer your question gmcakes, Iknow you can use ganache when doing a small whimsy cake. I did a 4,6, and 8' whimsy once with the bottom layer milk choc ganache. Then the middle was white choc, then top was dark choc. You just have to be EXTREMELY CAREFUL to avoid mucking up the surfaces.

I covered it in regular fondant (from Satin Ice). Underneath I used buttercream and buttercream in the cakes -- a non crusting buttercream. That way, I could chill the cakes before covering in fondant.
I think you don't need to cover in fondant for the tilted cake. the important thing is to get the consrtuction right. I used straws as my dowels (I don't mess with saws as the article on this site advises). And I used cardboard cake circles as cake plates - and it was very sturdy - especially when I drove a wooden dowel right down the center of the entire cake. Feel free to email me if you have any questions - not that i am anywhere near an expert on this - but i'm familiar with the initial confusion in constructing this cake.
wow! cake is awesome. That is one of my future proyects and I wish it will come out as good as yours!
grat job, love the colors!

It looks really great! I did a whimsical cake a few weeks ago. I was afraid of cutting my cake too much & not having any cake left so mine isn't very tilted. The next one I do I will have more courage to tilt it more! Your's looks great~
...I'm not having a good evening!!!!! I'm working on my first tilted tier cake. The cake is cut, angles look great, and it goes down hill from there. Was going to cover it with MMF, not good! (There is a new name I would like to call MMF at this time, but I'll be nice.) Made a batch of rolled buttercream, even worse. There are very few things in this world I can't do, but the more I work with any kind of fondant icing, the more I HATE IT! I am now having a quite moment. I have scraped all icing off the cake, and it is now chilling while I take a moment to chill. BOTH batches of previously mentioned icing are now in the TRASH! Will wait until I calm down, make a nice fresh batch of buttercream and try again!
Sorry, just needed to VENT!
