I still get so hung up on pricing! I did a lot of new techniques for me, so it took a long time. I know people say we should charge for our time, but I feel like I'm sooooo slow! I was wondering what you would have charged. It's an 11x15 choc with almond bc. Fondant peppers, sombrero, blanket, and maracas. The peppers and maracas are colored and then painted. The frame is gum paste with gold luster dust. I used 2 boards.
I made this for a family friend, but if I do charge for a cake like this in the future, I'd just like to have some ideas of where to start.

Please forgive the odd angle of the photo, but I wanted to show the work on the blanket.

Thanks,
Sarah

Our 11x15 is $35 and $20 extra for the fondant. At least $55 for sure!

Very nice - love the blanket by the way! icon_smile.gif

At least $50...... and probably even more due to your location. Great cake!!!

$70 -- that is a LOT of handcrafted details. You can bet that a "shop" would be at least that much. MyPastryChef or RisqueBusiness could tell you that. icon_wink.gif

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it. My DH and I came up with the design, but I was definitely inspired by some of the great cakes I've seen on CC. I ended up doing the blanket 3 times because it just wasn't coming out the way I envisioned. I still need to do a lot of practice in this area, but I thought it came out nice for first effort.

Sarah
Your cake is fabulous icon_lol.gif . A true work of art. It doesn't matter that you feel you are so slow, you did an excellent job and should charge accordingly. Here in New York City this cake would go for over $100. My daughter's workplace orders simple 9x13 sheet cakes with no decorations and pay $70 plus $20 delivery charge. I used to feel the same as you until my daughter told me this.

Sonoma, Your cake is fabulous. I love everything about it. I live in Los Angeles. I know for sure it would cost close to a hundred here and I think your prices are higher than here. This is very artistic. The problem with pricing cakes lower is it's difficult for a return customer to then pay more. But if you start high you can always go down .... a little!

Yep..I would go for 100 for sure..and that would be a starting price! IT's a LOT of work and detail!

50 would be for just the cake iced and wording!

I can't believe how cheap some of you guys are LOL. You easily get 40 good size servings out of an 11x15. For a single layer no filling plainly iced and decorated cake I would charge $1.50 a serving and that's $60! I say the absolute minimum is $80 and more is definately better! Don't sell yourself short.

I couldn't get more than $45 for this cake where I'm located. Pricing is heavily about location and competition~

No clue about pricing but your cake is fantastic! As I've read over and over on this board, DON'T SELL YOURSELF SHORT! You do wonderful work!

I totoall agreed with koolaidstains, do not sell yourself short. Even though I took a buisness class on how to price the cake I still feel like I am charging too much or sometimes not enough. I do the cake on the side upon request from my friends at work. The pricing structure is really depends on where you live. I occassionally called around different bakeries to see what their pricing structure looks like. I love your cake. Good work. icon_smile.gif

No pricing help for you but wanted to tell you how neat your cake is! It is super nice work and I would certainly think it is definitely worth a professional price. icon_smile.gif

Sometimes it takes a brave person to ask what they are worth! if you and only you in your area made such a cake and I wanted it...I know I wouldn't shop around then.

Wow guys, thanks again for all the added input. icon_biggrin.gif I'm going to make sure that I say this to myself over and over while I'm making my next cake for sale "My work is worth it" and "Don't sell myself short." It's soooo hard to do the pricing thing, as you all know! But thank you so much for the compliments and the encouragement. It really helps give some perspective.
