One of my instructors had said to save all your scrap BC of all colors in one bowl. That way, it won't take as much to make it black. If you try to use black coloring by itself, it ends up tasting bitter because of all the dye. Another tip is to start with chocolate BC and tint it black from there.

Good luck!

Start with a chocolate buttercream and then add black.

Ditto!

If they don't want a chocolate taste then get it a good dark brown with your color then add black.

Remember it can take up to 12 hours for the black to become it's darkest so make it a day ahead of when you need it to give it time to darken up.

I don't quite get your quesiton, do you mean posting a chocolate buttercream recipe?

Just make your chocolate frosting, and add black icing coloring (Americolor, Wilton etc) until you get a good black.

how do you keep the icing from staining your childs face? a mom wants me to make an elmo for a one year old but she is afraid of all the red icing for church the next day. I don't remember it staining your face and mouth for that long of a period of time, but I thought I had better ask... any ideas? icon_smile.gif

Make the icing a good orange color first then add red.

Like black, red can take up to 24 hours to reach it's true color so you will want to make that a day or two in advance too just in case you need to play with getting the color right.

Better idea? In my opinion....use fondant. They can peel it off, and eat the uncolored buttercream underneath.
