I have seen a recipe for rolled buttercream several times. Has anyone ever used this before??What is it like ?? Is it like fondant? Can you cover and decorate with it?? I was going to experiment with it but I thought I would ask everyone here first.

Thanks for any information ya'll can share!!

I've used it in the past. If you see my pics, I used it for the Barbie cake, that's pink and lavender.

I found it too greasy and shiny. Only used it a couple of times.

Right now I use regular fondant or occasionally MMF.

i love it! but thats me alot of people dont like to work with it. it is similar to fondant in that you can roll it and cover cakes with it, you can even make small decorations with it. I think everyone will agree that it tastes GREAT! Way better than fondant in taste. it has a shine to it that some people do not like and it is not as stiff as fondant. it depends on your preference. it is something you have to try to decide. I have used it a few times. I love the way it tastes but it does tear very easily when trying to cover the cake. I'm still new at this and maybe just haven't found the trick yet. Otherwise I really like it.

Just out of curiosity, can luster dusts be used on rolled buttercream? I have a friend I am making a birthday cake for and she HATES fondant---even MMF, so I thought I'd give rolled buttercream a try because I heard it tastes alot better. I would like to use dusts on this cake to give it a sheen, but I don't think that can be done with regular buttercream? Thanks in advance!!!

if it tears you can rub it or use a warm spatula to fix it.

the taste is good, but people don't like the shine, also rolling out between the plastic sheets is cumbersome

thanks everyone for their input. When rolling out fondant or mmf, I use crisco, would I need to do something of the same with this??? Or powdered sugar??

I thought Barbie cake looked great! I have to do a cake in the shape of a beer can, do you think the rolled buttercream would work best to achieve the shiny metallic look? Also, does the rolled buttercream taste better than fondant?
