would you use the ball pan or stacked round cakes? Can you use buttercream icing or does it have to be fondant. I know I've seen pictures on this website, and I want to attempt one in a few weeks if I think I can do it. Thanks for everyone's help and advice.

I don't know if this is right or not but this is how I did the ones in my pics.

Take a look at my pics and see if this is what you are going for...if so

I used the sports ball pan for the helmet. Since it wasn't enough servings I place it on a 8" square.

I baked both halves of the sports ball and after cooled and leveled I cut the bottom off of one so it would sit flat. I filled with BC and put the other half of a pan on top so I had the sportsball done and froze it. Then I did some carving to make the opening at the face mask. Iced in BC and smoothed with Viva. The face guard I have done two different ways. The first for the Cowboys helmet was all MMF. It wanted to crack on me and that is why I have the grass covering up some boo-boos. The Steelers one I made a wire frame from floral wire and covered it with MMF. This was great because I could do it the day of the cake instead of waiting days for it to dry, and I could still bend it to make it fit right. It is the only non-edible thing on the cake.
